The Sidney Civil Service Commission today issued a statement calling for a more rigid enforcement of traffic laws in the city, including speeding, reckless driving, drunken driving, parking on the wrong side of the street and in front of fireplugs, tail light and spot light laws. The statement was signed by C.H.C. Blue, as chairman; Fred L Griffis, as secretary, and Robert A. Eshman, treasurer and attorney.

75 years

December 11, 1948

Contracts were signed yesterday between Sidney city officials and representatives of the American Fire Apparatus Co., Battle Creek, Mich., for the purchase of a new township fire truck at a cost of $11,880.20. The new truck will replace the one now in use, which will be sold to the fire equipment company for the sum of $4,500. Delivery is promised within 18 to 20 days.

Carl W. Lehman will go to Columbus Monday, where he will be one of 25 Ohio presidential electors to cast their official electoral college ballots for President Harry S. Truman and Vice President Alben W. Barkley.

Five Shelby County men have been elected to three-year terms on the board of directors of the Sidney-Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, President Richard Frantz announced today. They are W. Harold DeVelvis, president of Sachs Famous Supply Co.; Atty. Harry N. Faulkner, of the law firm of Blake, Blake & Faulkner Co. L.P.A.; John W. Sargeant, vice president of Sidney Tool & Die Inc.; Thomas E. Shoemaker, innkeeper, Holiday Inn of Sidney; and Joseph D. Walls, manager of operations, LeRoi Division, Dresser Industries, Inc.

Farrel Kaplan, Sidney, looks through notebooks containing newspaper clippings and information relating to the annual Community Christmas Dinner. Kaplan has served as volunteer coordinator since the holiday meal program began in 1982.

ANNA – John Pleiman of Fort Loramie has been named plant manager of the Honda of America Anna Engine Plant. Larry Jutte of Sidney, former vice president and plant manager, will become the general manager of a new unit that includes the Marysville Motorcycle Plant and the Anna facility.

Herbert H. Schlater, a 25-year member of board of trustees of the Community Foundation, has stepped down from the position. Appointed in 1973, Schlater participated with four other trustees to oversee numerous funds benefiting numerous charitable and multipurpose distributions.

WASHINGTON (AP) – In a blend of constitutional drama and partisan struggle, the Republican controlled House Judiciary Committee approved three articles of impeachment Friday against President Clinton alleging perjury and obstruction of justice. Clinton pleaded for the lesser punishment of “censure and rebuke”.
