WAPAKONETA — The Auglaize County Historical Society’s Mooney Museum, 223 S. Main St., St. Marys, and Wapakoneta Museum, 206 W. Main St., Wapakoneta, will both be open on Sunday, March 24, from 1 to 4 p.m. with special features at both sites. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

The Wapakoneta Museum will exhibit many of the trophies from the 1972-73 St. Joseph High School basketball team, which was more successful than any Wapakoneta High School basketball since the 1940s. The trophies were donated to the Historical Society last year.

The Mooney Museum, opening for the 2024 season, will reveal its newly conserved 1860s-70s folk painting, which includes unexpected scenes of life in St. Marys after the Civil War. Little is known about the history of the painting, which, before conservation, was glued to an 1856 map.

Rachel Barber, director of the Historical Society said, “We welcome visitors Sunday to our museums, both to celebrate a wonderful chapter in athletic history and to explore a county mystery with us!”

Founded in 1963, the Auglaize County Historical Society collects, preserves, interprets, and shares the history of Auglaize County, enriching lives by connecting people and communities to the past and to each other.
