I was recently at an event in my community, and someone asked me about my plans for summer break. It made me wonder if people know what we do in the summer at SCBDD, so I thought I would share a few highlights. Shelby Hills Preschool does close in the summer, but the rest of the SCBDD staff work year-round. In fact, we are often busier than ever throughout these summer months.

From the Wright brothers, to American heroes like John Glenn and Neil Armstrong, the story of modern aviation was written in Ohio. Today, our state continues to lead the country in aerospace innovation, and in military service.

Juneteenth is on the horizon, and I think of my childhood and Osam Williams’ family celebrating the occasion by banging on pots and pans and singing. I never asked his sons, Norman Day and Sonny — who were friends of my brother and me — why they did that. This holiday was not in my high school history books, and I have a vague sense of learning about the chant “Send them back to Africa” and Liberia (In the early nineteenth century, members of the American Colonization Society felt that Blacks in America were more likely to proper if they took up residence in this West African location).

Unfair foreign competition is a massive problem for Ohio companies, particularly from countries like China, where the government much of the economy.
