Feb. 29, 1916

The Sidney Lodge of Elks has voted unanimously to remodel the interior of their new home at the corner of North Street and West Avenue. The work will begin this week under the direction of the contractor George W. Kline. The interior will be arranged so as to include a large dining room. Pool room, card room, reception room and kitchen downstairs, with main lodge room upstairs.

Marcelles Wagner, who has been studying for the priesthood at the St. Mary’s Seminary in Cincinnati for the last several years will be ordained on March 18, by Archbishop Moeller. He plans to come to Sidney the following day for a visit with his father W.H. Wagner, and family and read his first mass at Holy Angels Church on March 19.

Feb. 29, 1941

Three new directors were named when the boy’s club directors completed their organization at a meeting last night. The new directors are Mayor John Sexauer, F.S Freytag and Harry Piper. Carl Berger is president of the board; A.H. Henke, vice president, G.A. Lohmire, treasurer , and H.A. Stager, secretary.

50 years

Feb. 29, 1966

Sale of the Wagner Hotel Building, Ohio avenue and Piper street to Chester Middletown, R.R. 3 Sidney and his son Chester I. Middleton was learned today. The property was acquired from the Wagner Hotel Company for an undisclosed sum. Operation of the Hotel and the eight other businesses in the building is not expected to be affected by the transaction which includes only the real estate.

An Army citation and commendation medal have been presented to Spec. 6 Malachi McGinnis Jr. of Jackson Center for outstanding service as a criminal investigator, Criminal Investigation Division, Office of the Provost Marshal at the United States Army Artillery and Missile Center, Fort Sill, Oklahoma. The recognition accorded McGinnis, at the time of his transfer to South Vietnam, covered his 16 months of service at the Oklahoma base from Sept. 17, 1964 to Jan 3, 1966.

KEEP CANDLE BURNING — Sidney and area residents may wish to participate in the gesture signifying support of our troops. Place a single candle lamp with an orange bulb in a window as a 24 hour vigil in appreciation of their efforts. This practice is catching on in various communities and since so many of our area people are now involved it is a very appropriate in our community.

February has been recognized as Black History Month in a proclamation issued by Sidney Mayor Willaim McMillen. The proclamation notes that “the study of black history is finding it’s way into studies at educational institutions throughout the nation. One man, Carter G. Woodson, above all others was chiefly responsible for not allowing the proud history of America’s black people to fade into oblivion.”
