SIDNEY — Retirements and approval of staff for the 2021-22 school year were approved during the Sidney City Schools Board of Education meeting Tuesday night.
Following an executive session at the beginning of the meeting to discuss personnel, the employment of one staff member was pulled out of the personnel matters to be acted upon separately.
The motion to vote on the employment of Jason McLain was made by board President Jason Schaffner. McLain, who is currently the business manager for the district, was on the agenda to be hired as Sidney High School assistant principal and food services director.
Schaffner said the assistant principal’s salary and an additional $5,000 was added for the food service responsibilities. He asked Superintendent Bob Humble for an explanation of the additional funds.
Humble said with McLain’s new job, he will be spending time outside regular school hours to do the work associated with the food service position. He compared it to a coach receiving a supplemental contract for the work associated with the sport/club that they are involved with.
Humble said when the new administrative salaries were developed, “We’re not at the top. We’re not at the bottom. We’re in the middle.”
Humble said the board must also consider whether they want to hire someone who will be here a year or two to get experience and then move onto another district that pays more. Training a new person, he said takes time and the district is always dealing with turnovers.
The motion to approve McLain was 5-1 with Schaffner voting no. McLain’s amended contract is effective Aug. 1, 2021, and is for 215 days for $93,000.
The board also approved two other amended contracts for Greg Snyder and Dan Barnes. Snyder will be the new high school principal beginning Aug. 1, 2021, He will be paid $108,000 for a 260 day contract. Barnes will be the new high school assistant principal effective Aug. 1, 2021. He will be paid $90,000 for a 220 day contract.
Michael Ward was given a two-year contract to be the new Sidney Middle School assistant principal effective Aug. 1, 2021. He will be paid $78,000 on a 215 day contract.
The retirement resignations of Keith Helmlinger, principal, and Joni Renner, transportation coordinator, were accepted. Their retirement date is July 1, 2021.
The resignation of Jennifer Wiford, aide, was also accepted effective March 1, 2021.
One suspension due to reduction in force was approved for teacher Tim Tennant effective Aug. 1, 2021.
Substitute teachers were given one-year limited as needed contracts at $105 per day. Receiving contracts were Jenna Barlage, Katie Bensman, Chelsie Brautigam, Kieran Freistuhler, Michael Lipka, Christopher Parker and Andrea Steenrod.
Classified substitutes receiving a one-year limited as needed contract were Holly Davidson, substitute cook, $10.62 per hour, Mandi Fridley, substitute cook, $10.62 per hour, Joseph Hatke, substitute custodian, $14.79 per hour, and Hollie Voisard, substitute aide, $12.33 per hour.
Supplemental contracts were awarded to Kerri Adkins, head softball coach, $4,902; Kelly Carter, junior varsity softball coach, $2,655; Chuck Westerbeck, freshman and varsity assistant softball coach, $3,677; Hollie Westerbeck, Sidney Middle School softball coach, $1,634; Thomas Goffena, baseball head coach, $5m710; Corey Cotterman, junior varsity baseball coach, $3,472; Devin Stewart, freshman and varsity assistant baseball coach, $2,043; Jason Taylor, SMS baseball coach, $1,634; Dan Dicke, SMS baseball coach, $1,634; Bill McKinney, head boys track coach, $5,719; Adam Doenges, head girls track coach, $4,085; Allan Egbert, Sidney High School track assistant, $4,504; Joe Stockton, SHS track assistant, $4,504; Brian Johnson, SHS track assistant, $4,289; Kaitlyn Davis, SHS track assistant, $1,123’ Jalen Herd, SHS track assistant, $1,123; Frank Hall SMS track, $3,860; Joe Spangler, SMS track, $3,860; ShaRhonda Johnson, SMS track, $3,677; Donovan Gregory, tennis head coach, $3,268; Kyle Coleman, spring strength coach, $2,043, and summer strength coach, $2,043.
In other business, the board:
• Approved a cost sharing agreement with the city of Sidney for the acquisition and installation of crosswalk improvements estimated at a cost of $23,500. The school district will pay for one-third of the cost of the project and the city will pay for two-thirds of the project.
• Accepted tax rates and amounts determined by the Budget Commission to be collected in calendar year 2022 for tax year 2021.
• Approved the 2021-22 school calendar.
• Approved graduation seal requirements which will be awarded to all graduating classes beginning with the class of 2021. The seals include student engagement, community services and performing arts.
• Approved an overnight trip by the cheer team to Sandusky on March 26-28 for competition. All travel and competition expenses will be paid by parents and fundraising.
• Heard the legislative report from board member Bob Smith.
• Heard the Upper Valley Career Center board report from board member Michele Lott.
• Went into executive session to discuss employment of personnel. No action was taken.
The board’s next meeting will be Monday, March 15, at 6 p.m. at Sidney High School.
