SIDNEY — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office has welcomed its newest deputy.

Deputy Sarge joined the Sheriff’s Office on May 10 and has joined his new handler, Deputy Justin “JT” Tidwell.

Both Sarge and Tidwell started school on Monday May 16, 2022. They both will complete 240 hours of training and will eventually be certified to work as a Patrol/Drug dog. The training is being provided by Southwest Regional K-9 Training Group.

The United States Police Canine Association Inc. and the American Kennel Club formed an alliance to create the AKC Reunite, Adopt a K-9 Cop matching grant. The grant allows for law enforcement agencies to purchase canines to help keep their communities safe. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office received the grant and the grant made it possible to purchase Sarge. With the addition of Sarge, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office will now have three K-9 teams and each one will be assigned to one of the three shifts.
