YMCA announces winners of 2022 Lantz, Schauer Scholarships

SIDNEY – The Sidney-Shelby County YMCA held a reception on Thursday, May 26, at 5:30 p.m., to honor the 2022 recipients of the Lee E. Schauer Memorial and Jim Lantz Memorial scholarships.

Hope Bixler, daughter of Kim and Andy Bixler of Anna, and a graduate of Anna High School, was recognized as the 2022 recipient of the one-time $1,000 Lantz scholarship. Bixler plans to attend Miami University to study Biology and Pre-Medicine.

Shelby Ham, daughter of Laura and the late John Ham of Anna, was recognized as the 2022 recipient of the Schauer scholarship, the largest non-governmental scholarship in Shelby County in the amount of $12,000 paid over four years. Ham plans to attend The Ohio State University – Lima to study Health Sciences.

Both recipients are YMCA members and have been involved in a wide variety of volunteer activities in Shelby County, with Hope volunteering for numerous community organizations including Wilson Health, Anna Elementary’s Enrichment Program and Anna High School Study Tables. Bixler has served in numerous leadership positions at Anna High School, including Student Council President and Leader of Anna’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She has also won the Team Leadership Award for Cross Country. Hope has been described as, “kind and compassionate, and someone who builds people up.”

Ham has volunteered for the “Walk Your Socks Off” Down Syndrome walk and the Cystic Fibrosis Walk for several years. She also volunteered at the Y as a gymnastics coach and summer gymnastics camp leader. She was a cheerleader at Anna High School and received the 4-year award for cheer. Shelby has been described as, “hard-working, self-motivated, detail oriented, and driven to achieve.”

“On behalf of the Y’s Board and entire staff, we are honored to recognize this year’s scholarship recipients for their hard work and achievements,” said David O’Leary CEO of the Sidney-Shelby County Y. “We are grateful to the Lantz and Schauer families for their support of the young people in our community in commemoration of their loved ones, and we believe Hope and Shelby are both excellent representatives of their respective scholarships.”
