October 6, 1892

The painting of the water works standpipe was finished yesterday. The pipe which is 80 feet high and 25 feet in diameter, is nearly snow white, and the cornice is trimmed in yellow and green. It makes a very good appearance, and will be a great protection to the iron.

It is slightly aggravating to the Sidney resident to have been deprived of the luxury of rolling in the grass in the courthouse square this summer, for fear of wearing it out, and to see that it has been saved for the dogs. Dozens of mangy and flea-plagued curs, dragging decayed boots and castaway hats, may be seen in the spacious yard at almost any time. They have worn out more grass than all the children of the county would spoil.

100 Years Ago

October 6, 1917

Mayor Crozier has received a communication from the Wilbur Wright Aviation Field at Fairfield, Ohio, inquiring whether a field is available in this area that might be used for the landing of airplanes. The mayor intends to make an investigation of the matter.

The Sidney Post Office has been made the central office of the entire county. In the future all post offices in the county will report here and obtain their supplies instead of sending direct to Washington D.C., as formerly.

October 6, 1942

A Sidney man had a part in downing 13 Nazi planes in Friday’s daylight raid over France. Sgt. Forest Bertsch was a member of a B-17 flying fortress combat crew that participated in the attack with other united nations aircraft that was in a wide area of northwestern France. Bertsch is a 1937 graduate of Sidney High School and enlisted in the Air Force last October. (Ed. Note: Sgt. Bertsch, a real hero, received the Air Medal, Purple Heart and was a waist gunner on B-17’s.)

50 Years Ago

October 6, 1967

It’s back to New York next week and another television appearance for Jackie Frantz. This became known Wednesday when Jackie received a long distance telephone call advising her that she was the winner of the Ted Mack show which appears Aug. 20 on T.V. The Holy Angels junior, who has gained a wide reputation as a cornetist, received her original opportunity to appear on the amateur hour following her appearance in a contest at the Shelby County fair.

Ask Glenna Fogt if she thinks the Rehabilitation Center for Neurological Development at Piqua benefits the community and you get a quick and positive response. “Oh, definitely. When I first took Lester there, he was in a wheelchair. Now he can walk with a cane.” Mrs. Fogt’s husband, 78, had a stroke seven years ago.. The Fogts visit the Rehab Center “Mondays and Fridays for sure”. “It isn’t only the treatments”, Mrs. Fogt adds the people there are just lovely, like a family, and we like to go there just for the companionship. Mrs. Fogt is a retired school teacher.

NEW YORK (AP) Romance, Action, Drama, Controversy. The life of Donald Trump has it all-and its prime fodder for Broadway, a producer says. Trump’s girlfriend Marla Maples caused a boom in ticket sales when she joined the cast of the musical, “The Will Rogers Follies” And the fuss has made one of the producers think about putting Trump’s life to music.
