SIDNEY — Allen Daniels, 21, of Sidney, was arraigned in Sidney Municipal Court Monday morning on two counts of felonious assault, second-degree felonies.

Daniels is accused of beating his 6-week-old daughter, and her 2-year-old brother last week.

The original 911 call was placed by the children’s mother, Brooke Schutte, to the Sidney Police Department at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 11. She said a baby was not breathing at her residence at 1135 Hilltop Ave., Apt. F. First responders administered CPR to the infant and were able to revive her.

During the investigation a second victim was identified. Both children were taken to Wilson Health and then transferred to Children’s Medical Center in Dayton. The boy was later released to his grandmother.

The police department is not releasing the names of the minor children, said Sgt. Rob Jameson, who is in charge of the investigation.

Daniels bond was originally set at $60,000 when he was taken into custody by Sidney Police on Friday, but was increased to $200,000 at his court appearance Monday.

Jameson said the department had not been called to the residence for any type of abuse prior to this incident.

“There’s nothing that we’re aware of,” said Jameson. “This was the first time we were called.”

The first-responder who administered CPR to the infant last week was honored at a sheepdog by Sidney Police Chief William Balling. Officer Jon Hofmann was the first to arrive and immediately began CPR. He was able to revive the infant and the Sidney Fire Department took over care.

“Hofmann has been with our department for 16 years. His courage and professionalism as demonstrated by his actions on this day, make us proud to serve with him,” Balling said in a Facebook post.

The Sidney Police Department honors people who help out the community or perform some sort of heroic action as Sheepdogs.

Daniels’ case has been bound over to Shelby County Common Pleas Court. His next court date has not been scheduled yet.

“The incident is still under investigation,” said Jameson. “The case is still pending.”

Jameson said in addition to the two counts of felonious assault, an additional charge will be presented to the Shelby County grand jury on Thursday.
