Staff report

SIDNEY — Sidney Post 217 made the short trip to Hardman Field in Piqua to take on Post 184 in American Legion baseball action Tuesday night, and things didn’t go well, Piqua taking a 5-0 victory.

Sidney was back in action Wednesday night at home against Greenville.

Piqua got one in the second on a double, a walk, a hit batter and an error, then added three more runs in the third to put Post 217 in a big hole. The three runs scored on just one hit.

It stayed 4-0 until Piqua added another un in the seventh on a single, two wild pitches and a ground out.

Sidney pitchers Owen Leugers and Bryant McCarty allowed six hits, struck out five, walked four and hit two batters.

“They only outhit us 6-5,” said Legion coach Jim Koewler. “Bryant did a real nice job of coming on in relief, allowing only one run in six innings. But walks and hit batters were the problem. They came at critical times. We hadn’t played in six days because of the weather and it showed. Hopefully, we get back on track because it’s a busy week-and-a-half heading into tournament play.”

The team will compete in the Best of Ohio Showcase starting today.

Post 217 will play MVP-Koopman today at 12:15 at Athletes in Action, then play at the Annex Field in Springfield at 1:30 on Friday, and at Wittenberg at 6 p.m. Friday.

Whether Sidney will play on Saturday depends on how those three games go.

Post 217 will return home next Monday for a makeup game with Prospect Legion at 6 p.m. at Custenborder Field. Tuesday Sidney will take on Findlay in a 9-inning game beginning at 6 p.m., and then play a 9-inning game at Marysville one night later.
