SIDNEY — Sidney also advanced with a win on Monday, this one in Division 1 play at Sidney against the Fairmont Lady Firebirds. The final was 2-0.

Thge win gave the Lady Jackets a 12-4-1 record on the season, and put them in the semifinals on Thursday at home against Wayne. Sidney is the No. 5 seed and Wayne the No. 7 seed.

The game will be played at Sidney and start at 7 p.m., and the winner advances to the sectional finals at Northmont next Monday, probably against No. 2-seeded Beavercreek.

“We knew going in Fairmont had played some very good teams close, so we were going to have to play well and smart to come away with the win,” said coach Stacey Goffena. “The game was back and forth.”

At the 24-minute mark of the first half, Elaine Wisenmayer passes a ball backout of the 18 to Lizzie Barr, who used the wind to put a ball over the Fairmont keeper’s head. Sidney had severalmore shots at the goal, but settled for a 1-0 halftime lead.

“We were doing a lot of things right, but we couldnot get our offense going in the offensive third,” Goffena said. “Our defense was doing a great job of possessing the ball and making passes forward., but we couldn’t connect anything after that.”

The second half was better as far as possession by the Lady Jackets and they got an early goal from Shaynee Hanayik on a pass up the middle from Macie Ivey.

Fairmont dominated the final 12 minutes, but Sidney’s defense was up to the challenge and held on for the shutout. Goalie Sylvia Hudson had 13 saves.

“I thought overall we did what we needed to do to win the game,” Goffena said. “I could tell we were a little rusty, having not had a true competitive game in over two weeks. We also missed several opportunities on goal that we will need to convert on when we play tougher competition throughout the tourney run. I’m proud of my defense. They are usually always consistent and I’m happy that my two freshmen (Ivey, Wiesenmayer) are still contributing big time for us. They had both assists on the night.”
