SIDNEY — Increased activity on the Lehman Catholic High School campus means that the start of the 2015-16 school year is rapidly approaching. Athletic team drills, cheerleader practices, and the sounds of the Cavalier Marching Band have already brought many students “back to school” well before the Aug. 18 starting date.

The most exciting news on campus is a 10% increase in enrollment for the coming year. This figure includes 62 freshmen, four new upperclassmen and two international students from China and Mexico. The class of 2019 is the largest in several years.

During the summer, the Lehman Pro-Lifeguards completed work on an outdoor prayer center by adding a sidewalk and landscaping. Inside, new scoreboards were installed in the Schlater gymnasium. The building and grounds are also shiny clean, thanks to the summer labors of the custodial staff that includes Joyce and Mike Hughes, John Spillman, Eric Felger and summer student helper Chris Shepherd.

One big change for the upcoming school year involves the cafeteria. Lunch at Lehman is now offered through W.g.Grinders. Lunch prices will range from $3-4 and students will also have a salad bar option. In addition to lunch, W.g.Grinders will offer an after-school café which is great news for students who stay around for practices and athletic contests. Since many students travel a distance to attend Lehman, they are often on campus afterschool and into the evening without going home.

Students arriving on campus will be greeted by a number of new faces in their classrooms. Educators who have joined the Lehman staff are Brad Clough, Kristin Clune, Pete Dunlap, Kelsey Higgins, Kim Koverman, Tim Langenderfer, Ashley Minnich, and Angie Shappie.

Clough will be teaching Geography, U.S. History, Government, and AP Government. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Wright State University and is currently finishing his masters in history at Wright State. Clune is working part-time in the Development/Advancement Office as the Administrative Assistant. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Bowling Green State University.

Dunlap is the new assistant principal/dean of students. An 11-year veteran of the classroom, Dunlap holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Ohio University and a Masters in Educational Leadership from the University of Dayton. Koverman is the new guidance counselor in charge of scheduling and testing. She obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from The Ohio State University and a Master’s Degree and School Counseling License from the University of Dayton.

Langenderfer will teach art. He is a graduate of Ohio University and served as an adjunct professor at the University of Dayton for more than 20 years. Minnich is taking over the Spanish classes at Lehman and teaching a few classes at Holy Angels School. She received a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Dayton and a Masters of Arts from the University of Phoenix.

Saini will teach advanced English classes including junior English, AP junior English, senior English, and AP senior English. She graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor’s Degree in English. Shappie is the intervention specialist. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Toledo University and a Masters from the University of Dayton.

A Religious In-Service was held for the Lehman faculty and teachers from the northern-area partner schools (Holy Angels in Sidney, Holy Rosary in St. Marys, Immaculate Conception in Celina, Piqua Catholic, St. Mary in Greenville and St. Patrick in Troy).

The new staff members met on August 13 and joined the entire staff for a faculty meeting on the New Student Orientation Day on Aug. 14. The first day of classes for all students at Lehman Catholic is Tuesday, Aug. 18, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students are expected to arrive on time, in uniform, and prepared for class.

The new teachers will be introduced along with fall coaches and their teams at the annual Beanie Weinie/Meet the Teachers and Teams Night on Wednesday, Aug. 26. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a supper of hot dogs, baked beans, chips and a beverage. The introductions and Pep Rally will begin at 7:15 p.m. Admission is $2-3 and proceeds benefit the Lehman Athletic Boosters. Fall and Winter Season Athletic Passes will be on sale at the event as well as Cavalier spirit items.
