Sidney students win spelling bees

SIDNEY — Elementary schools in the Sidney City School District recently held their school-wide spelling bees. The winner and runner-up(s) at each school will go on to compete in the citywide spelling bee in early 2016.

Northwood Elementary held its spelling bee on Dec. 4. Twenty-three students in third- fourth- and fifth-grade participated in the bee, which went eight rounds. Olivia Keller, daughter of Rob and Cristina Jenkins, won the bee by correctly spelling “fulfilling.” Kayla Rush, daughter of Yvonne Parke was the first runner-up, with Rocelyn Cathcart, daughter of Mark and Darlene Cathcart, finishing as the second runner-up. Emily Church, speech pathologist at Sidney City Schools was the pronouncer. Gary Reed, David McKay and Sarah Steenrod were the judges.

Whittier Elementary held its spelling bee on Dec. 11, 2015. Twenty-seven students in third-, fourth- and fifth-grade participated in the bee, which went 10 rounds, with an additional spell-off for runner-up. Landen Johnson, son of Kevin and Kim Johnson, won the bee by correctly spelling “disarray.” Ella Wildenhaus, daughter of Jim and Laura Wildenhaus, was the first runner-up. Travis Cooper, speech pathologist at Sidney City Schools, was the pronouncer. Keith Helmlinger, Annette Johnson, Tiffany Goffena and Brooke Marshall were the judges.

Longfellow Elementary held their spelling bee on Dec. 15, 2015. Thirty-nine students in third- fourth- and fifth-grade participated in the bee, which went nine rounds. Fifth-grader student Cambry Cox, daughter of Jennifer Cox, won the bee by correctly spelling “hammock.” Brayden Taylor, son of Sam Taylor, was the runner-up. Barb Kinninger, retired SCS speech pathologist, was the pronouncer. Lori Spence, Sidney Police Department Officer Mike McRill and Stacey Lefeld were the judges.

Emerson Elementary also held their spelling bee on Dec. 15, 2015. Twenty-three students in third-, fourth- and fifth-grade participated in the bee, which went eight rounds with an additional spell-off for runner-up. Jace Cromes (SMS fifth-grade), son of Jennifer Kelly, won the bee by correctly spelling “montage.” Kaelin Hickman, daughter of Wes and Trista Hickman, was the runner-up. Ellen Jay, retired SCS speech pathologist was the pronouncer. Diane Voress, Becky Hewitt, and John Scheu were the judges.
