Appointment of Fred J. Russell as a member of the Shelby County Liquor License Board, to succeed A. Friedman, was announced at Columbus today. Russell is chairman of the county Republican executive committee and had the endorsement of the committee for the position.

75 years

Dec. 30, 1940

Mrs. Walter Pence was elected president when members of the Daughters of Union Veterans named officers at their meeting yesterday in the IOOF Temple. Mrs. Flint Slusser was elected senior vice president; Mrs. Ed Hawver, junior vice president; Mrs. James Pence, chaplain; Mrs. Louis Rieck, treasurer; and Miss Dorothy Frey, instructor.

Harvey Parkes is announcing the purchase of the Wilt Grocery Store on South Ohio Avenue, and is planning to move into the new location as soon as several changes have been made. His present location on Brooklyn Avenue has been sold and is to be removed to make way for another building.

Dec. 30, 1965

When Junior Fair Board members held an election of officers for 1966, the following results were reported: Donald Watkins, president; William Hoewischer Jr., vice president; Mary Ellen Barhorst, secretary; and Rita Johnson, treasurer.

Additional sections of Interstate Highway 75, both north and south of Sidney, are scheduled for opening in 1966, State Highway Director P.E. Masheter reported to Gov. James Rhodes today. Included are approximately 11 miles of the road northeast of Lima, and three sections of I-75 in central Dayton.

Dec. 30, 1990

A new academic competition involving Sidney High and other schools in the Greater Miami Valley Conference (GMVC) has been created. The competition will be run under the same rules as the state academic contest, with the winner of the new GMVC competition qualifying for the state event, said Lee Miller, Sidney High English teacher. Ten Sidney High students have been selected to serve on the team for the GMVC contest. They are seniors Todd Arthur, Rob Hemp, Andre Davis, Matthew Allen, and Jason Nuss; juniors Scott Wallace, Karen Davidson and Alex Clarkson; and sophomores Ricardo Winterstein and Rob Strayer.
