District governor visits Sidney Rotary

SIDNEY — Rotary District Governor Bill Shula visited the Rotary Club of Sidney’s weekly meeting, March 7.

Shula, a native of Cincinnati, congratulated local Rotarians for their efforts to eradicate polio. Rotary International’s campaign, started three decades ago, continues to make headway.

“This year marks the 30th anniversary of Rotary’s Polio Plus Program,” Shula told local Rotarians. ”It’s been over three years since we’ve seen Type 3 wild polio in the world, which means that this particular strain has most likely disappeared forever. When Rotary began this campaign, 1,000 people every day were contracting polio. Last year, there were just 54 cases. It is now found in just two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. We are getting close to our goal.”

Shula also encouraged members to “be a gift to the world,” this year’s Rotary theme. “You have no idea how you influence others,” Shula told the Sidney club’s members.

Rotary District 667 has 52 clubs and more than 3,000 members. Shula encouraged Sidney Rotarians to continue to spread Rotary’s message. “I appreciate the fact that you have an active membership campaign,” Shula stated.

The Sidney Rotary club is a member of Rotary International, the world’s largest service organization. The local club meets every Monday at the Sidney Moose Lodge at noon. Anyone interested in learning more about this service club can visit a meeting.
