Fire claims children’s lives

WAYNESFIELD — Wayne Township Fire and EMS Chief Albert Presnell released details of an early morning fire that occurred Wednesday resulting in the death of two children ages 7 and 10.

At approximately 6:43 a.m. Wednesday, a neighbor called 911 reporting a fire at 18339 State Route 196, north of the village of Waynesfield. Wayne Township Fire and EMS responded along with Waynesfield Police and immediately found the home totally involved. Other surrounding fire departments were called to assist. All attempts made to rescue the victims inside were unsuccessful. Two children were later found inside the residence deceased.

The Ohio State Fire Marshall’s Office was dispatched to the scene and is investigating the fire along with Wayne Township Fire Department, Auglaize County Coroner’s Office and Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office Detectives.

Other agencies assisting included Uniopolis Fire Deptartment, Westminster Fire and EMS, Ohio State Highway Patrol, REACT, Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office, Auglaize County Victim’s Assistance and The Critical Incident Stress Management Team of Allen County.

No other details are being released at this time pending the investigation.
