Wanted teen slaying suspect captured in Piqua

PIQUA — A teenager who was the most hunted fugitive from Lima was captured Saturday after he made one last desperate attempt to run away across Interstate 75 and into a woods.

Lima Police Department officers with the help of state troopers captured 16-year-old Albert A. McDowell about 1:30 p.m. as he tried to run into a woods off the Interstate after running across the lanes of travel near a rest area near Piqua, about 50 miles from Lima, Lima Police Department officials reported.

The department had dedicated a lot of resources toward tracking, locating and capturing McDowell, who was considered very dangerous, and finally had success. He is the chief suspect in the killing of 19-year-old Da’Veon Petaway on March 7 at a convenience store. Officials said Petaway used his last dying breath to tell officers McDowell shot him.

Petaway was shot once in the abdomen at Meat City at 801 E. Kibby St. He was pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital.

McDowell was expected to appear in Allen County Juvenile Court sometime Monday for a detention hearing.

McDowell also may be linked to another murder, a detective said.

Detective Steve Stechschulte of the Lima Police Department said investigators have “concrete evidence” linking McDowell to the shooting of Petaway. Stechschulte described McDowell as a “primary participant” in the Petaway shooting and the slaying of Petaway’s brother, Khylil Florence, in January 2015. Another teen, Damere Crockett, 17, was convicted in that slaying and sentenced to 12 years in prison but investigators believe McDowell also was involved.

Two weeks ago, police, the sheriff and Crime Stoppers held a news conference offering $1,000 for information leading to McDowell’s arrest. Authorities described him as a dangerous man.
