100 Years

April 6, 1916

The home of W.H. Persinger of South Main Avenue has been sold to the Holy Angels Church. During the past few weeks the residence property of Frank Thedieck and the Mayer property have been purchased by the church. It is the intention to erect a school and assembly hall and gymnasium on the property sometime in the future.

The Third Regiment will be ready to move when the order comes. Arrangements have been completed placing everything in readiness to respond to the call for immediate action. If the regiment is called out it will probably mobilize at Columbus, and spend several days in some southern state to acclimate the men to the temperature change, before moving to the Mexican border.

75 Years

April 6, 1941

Sidney High School’s 70th annual commencement will see the largest class of seniors in its history graduate on June 4, following action by the board of education in approving the list of graduates submitted by Supt. C.C. Crawford. The class membership of 135 includes 65 boys and 70 girls. Dr. Preston Bradley, pastor of the People’s Church in Chicago, will be the commencement speaker.

Mrs. W.H.C. Goode, Miss Frances Goode and William H.C. Goode have established their residence in the Beebe homestead, at 124 North Ohio Avenue, during the time their home “Whitby Place” is being repaired. Heavily damaged by the recent fire it will be several months before the home is ready for occupancy.

50 Years

April 6, 1966

Members of the Sidney Planning Commission at their session Tuesday afternoon gave formal approval to the plat of Sec. 1 of the Green Tree Hills subdivision, located at the west city limits. Included in the plat are 63 buildings lots.

Leading the Easter parade to church Sunday morning will be the Sisters of Charity, a community of nuns of the Roman Catholic Church, who teach at Holy Angels parochial school. The new habit is dark blue instead of black. It is made of a material which is part nylon and part wool and the design is the result of many years of work by members of the order.

25 Years

April 6, 1991

As of today, the Sidney McDonald’s restaurant is offering pizza on its menu as part of a test marketing program. McDonald’s Pizza is available in four varieties and two sizes, a 12-inch family size and a 6-inch personal size. Each McDonald’s Pizza is prepared to order and oven-baked in less than five minutes. “We are very excited to be able to bring McDonalds’ Pizza to this area,” said Benjamin Scott, McDonald’s owner/operator.

Representatives of Voinovich Companies, the company hired to prepare preliminary plans for a new county jail, began their scheduled meetings this week with Shelby County officials Tuesday at the County Commissioners’ office. Voinovich Companies of Cleveland is working under a deadline now less than two weeks away to come up with a preliminary design, including size and cost, and a possible site for a new county jail.

Kiddieland Preschool, a service ministry of the First Church of the Nazarene in Sidney, will celebrate its 10th anniversary with an open house on Saturday, from 2 to 4 p.m. The open house will be at its new facilities at 1899 Wapakoneta Avenue. The public and especially former children, parents and teachers are invited to tour the new facilities and to view a presentation of the children’s curriculum and artwork.
