Final preparations made for Super Saturday Recycling Day

SIDNEY — The final preparations have been made for the fifth annual Super Saturday Recycling Day scheduled for Saturday, April 16, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Shelby County Fairgrounds.

The event, co-sponsored by Goodwill Easter Seals of the Miami Valley (GESMV), the city of Sidney, the Shelby County Commissioners, the Sidney-Shelby County Health Department, Minster Bank, Shelby County Libraries, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, the Shelby County Emergency Management Agency, the Shelby County Agricultural Society, the Sidney-Shelby County Chamber of Commerce and the North Central Ohio Solid Waste District.

“Many companies and individuals literally had tons of computers, printers, monitors and other hardware and software sitting in closets and were uncertain how to dispose of the items properly,” Sidney Mayor Mike Barhorst said. “We were able to work with GESMV to not only help properly dispose of items no longer needed, but by recycling their component parts, enable GESMV to provide full-time employment for more than two-dozen handicapped individuals.”

After the success of the first year, Minster Bank joined the effort, providing secure document shredding on the same day at the same site.

“Minster Bank is excited to again be participating in this Super Saturday,” Branch Manager Rhonda Keister said. “We have provided ‘Shred-It’ for our customers for some time and this provides an opportunity for the entire community to be provided secure, confidential document shredding, courtesy of Minster Bank.”

Two years ago, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office joined the effort, collecting no longer needed prescription and over-the-counter drugs so that they can be disposed of properly. Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart was surprised by the amount of drugs collected that first year, and each year since.

“Residents can drop off no longer needed drugs every day at the Sheriff’s Office,” Lenhart said. “As a result, I was amazed by the number of people who took our advice and cleaned out the medicine cabinets. Some found drugs whose prescriptions had expired more than a decade before.”

Last year, Shelby County Libraries began accepting books, and have received thousands of books since. “The books are divided into three categories,” Shelby County Libraries Executive Director Suzanne Cline said. “Some of the books are added to our collection. A larger amount of books are offered to the public in our annual book sale.”

GESMV will accept both working and non-working computers, monitors, hard drives, printers, fire walls, printer cartridges, keyboards, mice, cords, cables, software, routers, switches, scanners and servers.

There is a charge for television sets. Because of the lead that is used in the television screens, the glass is not currently recyclable, and as a result, GESMV has to pay to dispose of the glass. Small sets are $5. Larger sets are $10.

“105.5 TAM FM ’s Joe Laber will again be broadcasting live from the event,” Barhorst said.

The North Central Ohio Solid Waste District will provide lunch for the volunteer workers.

Anyone wishing to volunteer to help with the effort is welcome to come to the Shelby County Emergency Management Agency building at the Shelby County Fairgrounds Saturday morning.
