Hoying’s grand slamleads to win in opener

Fort Loramie High School graduate Jared Hoying is off to an good start for the Round Rock Express, the Class AAA affiliate of the Texas Rangers.

Hoying is currently hitting .304 after Tuesday afternoon’s win over Omaha (Royals). He was 1 for 4 with his 10th run batted in already this season.

Monday’s night’s loss to Omaha saw him belt his second home run of the season, a solo shot in the sixth inning of a 4-1 loss.

His first home run was a grand slam in the season-opening 7-3 victory over Iowa City. He was 2 for 3 with four RBIs in that win.

In the other three games of the opening series with Iowa City (Cubs), he was 1 for 3 with a double, 1 for 5 with a double and 1 for 4 with a two-run single and three RBIs.

Round Rock swept that series.

On the season so far, Hoying leads the team in runs batted in with 10, is tied for the team lead in home runs with two, has a .370 on-base percentage and a .696 slugging percentage.

Hoying was drafted by the Rangers in the 10th round in 2010.

• Meanwhile, Marion Local High School grad Cory Luebke is pitching for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He has seen action in one game so far out of the bullpen, working two-thirds of an inning and allowing no runs, one hit, with one walk and one strikeout. That came in a 5-1 win over the Cardinals.
