April 13, 1916
Purchase of the residence of the late Julia A. Lamb, at the corner of Poplar Street and Miami Avenue, and convert it in a Masonic home, was authorized by members of Temperance Lodge, F. & A.M. when they met last evening. One of the largest crowds in the history of the lodge was present. The action was unanimous to purchase the property for $7,500.

“Fi Fi Of the Toy Shop” will be presented Thursday and Friday evenings in the high school auditorium. Principal parts in the production will be played by: Maud Haslup, Erma Pfefferle, Homer Crusey, Frank Goode, Mrs. P.F. Sarver, Robert Taylor, Carl Custenborder, Margaret Loudenback, Mary Pfefferle, Mrs. Roy Fry, Dave Sheldon, Bonnie Zimpher, Louise Reddish, Lester Green, Edward Flinn, Harry Pickles, and Richard Pfefferle.

Slot machines and other gambling devices exhibited at various places in Sidney and Shelby County disappeared this week on orders received from state officers. The orders indicated that if they were not heeded, prosecutions would follow.

Capt. Roscoe Stump, commanding officer of Co. I, 48th Infantry, has been relieved of active duty with the company to return to Sidney and take over his position as superintendent of the Liberty Folder Co. C.R. Anderson, president of Liberty, said the company has already filed with the defense commission its willingness to manufacture shells when requested to do so.

The Sidney Lucky Barrel had a $600 winner this week, but will still be worth that amount for the next award because of an accumulated balance. The winner was Mrs. Peggy J. Curtner, of 702 South Miami Avenue, who registered while the barrel was at The Famous during the past seven days.

Formal installation of eight new members was made by District Governor Robert McGee, of Hillsboro, at the regular meeting of the Rotary Club in Shelby Manor. New members receiving their charge of club responsibility included Frances Carpenter, Forest Friend, Joseph Meyer, Edward Harper, Robert Althoff, Robert Brinkman, Thomas Kramer and John Sargeant.

Voinvich Companies, the Cleveland-based company the Shelby County Commissioners have hired to prepare preliminary plans for a new jail, have recommended that Shelby County build a 24-bed, 60,000 square foot jail to meet its space needs for the next 30 years. The building would be a two-story structure, with jail cells on both floors in the back half of the building. The three sites under consideration are: Fair Road, 15 acres owned by Shelby County near the Fair Haven Shelby County Home; Gearhart Road near the Shelby County Engineer’s Office, eight acres owned by Shelby County; Downtown Sidney on the north side of the City Building on West Poplar Street. These 2.6 acres are owned by the city.
