Parents: take responsibility for kids

To the editor:

April marks the national observance of Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month. It emphasizes that child abuse and neglect occur in every community, that they happen year-round and there is a network of individuals and organizations committed to keeping children safe.

The Children Services Division of Shelby County Job and Family Services is mandated by law to intervene and investigate reports of abuse and neglect in Shelby County and provide services when deemed necessary. The fact is that parents are the key to keeping their children safe and should adhere to some basic principles in their everyday lives:

• Resolve to be a good role model because children often mimic their parents. If you keep your cool, use appropriate language and hold true to your word, your children are much more likely to do the same.

• Resolve to know your children. Who are their friends? Do these friends drink, smoke or skip school? Monitor the use of computers and other technology for inappropriate content and relationships.

• Resolve to keep an open line of communication with your children. Educate them at appropriate developmental stages and don’t assume they will learn the information elsewhere.

• Resolve to know the character of adults you expose your children to either through personal relationships or as providers. Take the initiative to learn more about individuals you trust with the care of your children.

• Resolve to use effective discipline that involves teaching your children the right way to do something. The parent should be the authority figure but not discipline out of anger. Consistent and informative discipline will teach your children to respect authority and develop good habits.

The child welfare system is here to intervene, educate and protect when necessary, but ultimately, it is the parents and their support system that dictate the safety and well-being of their children.
