Piqua pitcher no-hits Sidney

Staff report

SIDNEY — Sidney hosted Piqua Tuesday in a night game at Custenborder Field, and it proved to be a real pitcher’s duel.

When it was over, Piqua’s Blake Wright got the best of it, throwing a no-hitter against the Yellow Jackets in a 2-0 verdict in Greater Western Ohio Conference North Division baseball action.

He struck out eight Sidney hitters and walked five in pitching his gem, but barely outdid Sidney’s Zane Walker, who allowed just one earned run, scattered six hits, struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Piqua plated a run in the second on a two-out base hit by Ethan Garland. Piqua had a runner on third with nobody out thanks to a throwing error, but Walker got a ground out and a pop out to strand him there. But he couldn’t get the third out before a run came across.

It stayed at 1-0 all the way to the top of the sixth, when the Indians scored their only earned run on a single, a sacrifice, a fielder’s choice and a slow roller that Walker fielded but the runner beat out.

The Jackets fall to 0-3 in the GWOC North and 2-6 overall.

St. Henry 2, Minster 0

ST. HENRY — An outstanding pitching effort by Josh Nixon wasn’t enough for the Minster Wildcats Tuesday.

St. Henry’s Mitchell Stammen pitched a perfect game, retiring all 21 Minster batters he faced in a 2-0 victory in Midwest Athletic Conference baseball action at St. Henry.

The loss left the Wildcats at 3-2-1 on the year and put St. Henry at 6-0. It was the first MAC game for both.

Stammen struck out 13 batters on his way to the no-hitter. He outdueled Minster righty Josh Nixon, who allowed just two hits — both in the first inning — while striking out out nine and walking just one. Only one of the runs he allowed as earned.

“Stammen is a good pitcher, but we lacked a little bit of discipline at the plate,” said Minster coach Mike Wiss. “We swung at too many off-speed pitches out of the zone.”
