MINSTER — Two weeks ago, Minster High School announced that girls basketball assistant coach Mike Wiss had been named to take over the head coaching job after the resignation of longtime head coach Nann Stechschulte.

But on Wednesday, athletic director Josh Clune announced that Wiss had decided not to accept the head coaching position.

In the news release Clune sent out, it stated that “due to time commitments as a husband, father of four, teacher and head baseball coach, Mike Wiss has decided not to accept the head girls basketball coaching position at Minster High School. Coach Wiss plans to still coach in the girls program, but feels it is in the best interest of the school, the girls basketball program, and his personal life for someone else to lead the girls basketball program.”

When contacted Wednesday night, Wiss said “I knew going in that it was going to be difficult and I guess the question in my mind was can I do this. I knew it wouldn’t be the easiest thing in the world time-wise. It got to the point where I realized it would be pretty difficult here at home. I love each one of those girls and I’m not just going to leave them. I’m just not sure this is the time for me to be making all the calls.”

Meanwhile, Cline said “As athletic director, I am very supportive of Mike’s decision and look forward to his continued support in Minster athletics.”

Minster is now accepting applications for the girls head coaching position, and a teaching position in physical education is available.

The deadline to apply is April 25 and interested candidates should sent a letter of interest and a resume to Josh Clune, Athletic Director, Minster Local Schools, 100 E. Seventh Street, Minster, Ohio, 45865.

It can also be emailed to Clune at [email protected].
