April 27, 1916

Velma Baker was declared the winner of the spelling contest held in Port Jefferson last evening. She spelled 294 of the 300 words correctly. The contest was one of the most spirited ever held in Salem Township, with 24 competing for the championship. Rexford Thompson and Bertha Duvall finished in a tie for second with 274 words spelled correctly.

75 Years

April 27, 1941

Visitation Day for the Sidney public schools brought a total of 458 visitors into the different buildings to witness for themselves the daily activities in the various classrooms. The largest number of visitors was at the high school with 125.

From Army to civilian life, Capt. And Mrs. Roscoe Stump and their three children have arrived back in Sidney from Camp Shelby, Miss. Capt. Stump, who has commanded the local Co. I since 1936, was released from military duty because the government considers his employment in industry here as a key employment. He was released to resume his duties as superintendent of the Liberty Folder Co.

50 Years

April 27, 1966

JACKSON CENTER – A Jackson Center High School sophomore blames her classmates for her superior rate in the state science show at Columbus a week ago. “Around here they just don’t let you fail,” says Marcia Mertz, 16. “They just kept saying ‘you have to win’ and I did.” And she’s the only Shelby Countian to take a top at the state level. Marcia’s entry was in zoology, a branch of biology. The object of the exhibit was to show the development of a chicken from one to 21 days as a study in embryology.

Miss Jan Folkerth was one of 22 students of the Tina Cummings Modeling School, Dayton, who joined Miss Cummings on a New York City Tour. Various fashion schools, fashion magazine houses, modeling agencies and the Fashion Institute of Technology were visited.

25 Years

April 27, 1991

Young people celebrated spring Friday and Saturday nights during proms for Fairlawn and Lehman High Schools. Lehman’s prom was celebrated Saturday night at Upper Valley Joint Vocational Center in Piqua, where Amy Schmidt, 18 and David O’Leary, 17, held court as queen and king. Fairlawn High’s prom queen and king, Carman Chrisman, 18, and Kreig Small, 17, share a dance during Saturday’s event at the high school.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Ohio State University’s television station says it has canceled delayed broadcast of football games this fall – breaking a tradition of almost 40 years because of a tight budget. “Everybody I’ve talked to wants to keep the games, but nobody seems to be able to dig deep enough to come up with the money it would take to do that,” said Dale K. Ouzts, general manager of WOSU television and radio stations.
