October 29, 1891

The state fish car passed south attached to the 10:30 a.m. train today. By an arrangement made with the commission last spring, Charles Timeus received a number of bull head catfish and other varieties, which were placed in his ice pond northeast of town.

The Republicans of Sidney turned out in a body last evening and gave their standard bearer a warm reception.The armory was was crowdwd ti its upmost capacity to hear Major McKinley and in a speech over two hours in length he did not want for attentive listeners.

100 Years Ago

October 29, 1916

Fire last night completely gutted the T.C. Norton grocery store on West Poplar street and caused serious damage to several adjacent buildings. Smoke was discovered coming from the grocery, located in the Small building shortly before 12 o’clock, and within minutes the interior of the structure appeared to be a mass of flames. Heavily damaged also were Kiser’s meat market and the Keplinger building located to the west. Steinle’s Stove Store and the Waltz barber shop, located to the east received some damage from smoke and water.

S.B. Purnell took a picture of the fire on West Poplar street and had a photograph on exhibition in the show window by 9 o’clock this morning.

75 Years Ago

October 29, 1941

Thirty five Sidney and Shelby County young men left this morning by bus for Fort Hayes in response to call No. 28 for the Shelby county selective service board. This was the largest call the local board has received to date. The group was in the charge of Thomas Van Etten and Cletus Bergman.

John Dudley, young Australian tenor of the Metropolitan will sing here this evening in the high school auditorium in the first presentation of the cooperative concert series for this year.

50 Years Ago

October 29, 1966

Pumpers 1 and 3 of the Sidney fire department went to Central Junior High School at 3:45 p.m. Friday, where a drum was on fire in the basement. Possibly started by a faulty battery charger, the fire was put out without damage.

In Friday’s Indian summer weather it was inevitable: two boys estimated to be under eight years old were sighted going south on a Miami river raft near Court street, by Hugh Weigle. The pair eluded Sidney police bent on ending their cruise, around 12:33 p.m.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputy David Richardson has completed a 120-hour training course which began Oct 10 in Lima. The three-week course was sponsored by the Lima Police Department. Twelve law enforcement officers took the course.

October 29, 1991

Wauneta Helman was presented with a clock by Stephanie Maure, past president of the Shelby County 4-H Junior Leadership Club, in recognition of her 50 years as a 4-H advisor. The presentation was made at the 4-H advisors recognition banquet Monday night.

The ongoing strike at Baumfolder Co. and the fact that the 99 strikers are likely to be out of work permanently was discussed by Sidney City Council Monday night. “I am concerned that we are going to have 99 more people joining the ranks of the unemployed, especially at this time of year,” said councilman Charles “Chuck” Craynon at the end of the council meeting. He said he hopes that all social service agencies in the community will be able to assist the strikers and their families during the holiday’s.
