SIDNEY — The man who left the scene of a fatal accident in May was sentenced to five years of community control and 90 days in jail on Wednesday.

Timothy J. Huelskamp, 52, of Wapakoneta, entered a guilty plea in September to one count of stopping after an accident, a felony of the third-degree.

The charge followed an incident on May 11 when he struck and killed Katriz M. Dilworth, 38, of Maplewood, in the 10000 block of Sidney-Freyburg Road near Anna around 11 p.m.

Dilworth struck a dog with her vehicle, and when she got out of her vehicle to help the animal she was struck by the vehicle driven by Huelskamp. He left the scene and turned himself in to the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office the next morning.

In court on Wednesday, Huelskamp said, “I am truly sorry for this accident. I live with it every day of my life. I wish it hadn’t happened.”

Judge James Stevenson ordered Huelskamp be allowed to report to jail on Nov. 16 and be part of the work release program offered by the jail with the filing of the correct paperwork.

It was mentioned in court, in addition to insurance money granted to Dilworth’s family, Huelskamp agreed to pay the family nearly $7,000 in restitution.

Shelby County Prosecutor Tim Sell said the recommendation of the probation is in line with similar cases like this.

“I know the family has been critical of the way my office has handled the case, but with talking to law enforcement we brought charges we felt were the most accurate,” Sell said. “He knew he hit that woman and didn’t stop.”

Stevenson said he took into consideration that Huelskamp had no intent to hit her, but that the conduct of leaving the scene was the crime in this situation.
