This week will be the Dairy Luncheon at the New Bremen Pizza Hut on Wednesday, Dec. 21. This month we will be discussing Stray Voltage with Steve Seitz. Dutch-treat lunch (pizza!) begins at 11:30 a.m. with the program from noon to 1p. Last month we had a great crowd! Let’s see if we can match it!

Our office will be closed on Friday, Dec. 23, and on Monday, Dec. 26. We will be back on Tuesday, Dec. 27, so you can get your questions answered and reservations in for West Ohio Agronomy Day, Monday, Jan. 9, at St. Michael’s Hall in Fort Loramie! We have Private Pesticide Applicator Recertification Credits in CORE and Categories 1, 2, and 6 and Certified Crop Advisor CEUs in NM, PM, PD, and CM. Commercial Pesticide Applicator Recertification credits have been applied for … Fertilizer Applicator Certification Training for those already holding a Pesticide Applicator’s License will also be offered.

Be sure to arrive early for breakfast and the Market Update by Sunrise Cooperative at 8:30 a.m.! The actual training starts at 9a. And, yes, there are additional sponsors to help provide the great lunch, facilities, free publications: Precision Agri-Services, Planter and Technology Services from Minster; Precision Agri-Services, Inc., Minster; Lena Ag Center, Conover; Conklin Ag Products, Delphos; and, B&B Ag Vantage, Conover! (B&B: Thanks for being a “first-timer” since I’ve been here!)

These sponsorships also support the Evening Portion on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at the Days Inn, Sidney. Supper will be available at 5 p.m. with the training starting at 5:30 p.m. This program offers only Private Pesticide Applicator Recert credits and the two-hour training for Fertilizer Applicator Certification. You can register for either of these by contacting our office!!

The 2017 Ohio Beef School webinar series will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 17. The goal of this year’s series will be to demonstrate how the relationships between the three primary sectors of the beef industry in Ohio – cow-calf, backgrounding/stocker, and feedlot – must work together to produce high quality beef for today’s consumer.

Jan. 17’s program will focus on that cow-calf part: Dr. Justin Rhinehart, University of Tennessee, will focus on management practices that help the cow-calf producer stay viable and Dr. Amy Radunz, University of Wisconsin, will follow with a presentation on how nutrition and management during gestation impacts the lifetime development of the resulting calf.

On Feb. 7, Dr. Francis Fluharty, Ohio State University, will compare grazing versus confinement growing systems for feeder cattle and how calf health and management impact the end product. Dr. Justin Sexten, Certified Angus Beef, with wrap up the series on Feb. 28 with a discussion on meeting consumer demand, a perspective from the feed-yard to the consumer.

Each evening’s webinar will be broadcast live beginning at 7 p.m. These webinars will be offered in Auglaize County at the County Administration Building, Blackhoof St., Wapak and also in Darke County at the OSU Extension office on Wagner Street in Greenville. Please contact Jeff Stachler (Auglaize; 419-739-6580, [email protected]) or Sam Custer (Darke; 937-548-5215, [email protected]) for more information. Please register by Jan. 16.

Well, things are coming together on the homefront! The kids have been sleeping at the farm house, about eight nights over the past two weeks. James says, “It’s kinda like camping – pack up and haul stuff over (pillows/blankets,etc.) then be back at your place the next day for meals, bathing, entertainment, etc.” That Dec. 10 deadline did not happen! It will be sometime in January until they get the kitchen completed with the sink and countertop … But, progress is being made!

Merry Christmas, everyone! It’s comin’ fast!
