An unusual phase of the school book question will probably be agitated at the approaching session of the legislature. A prominent member of the House will introduce a bill early in the session, providing for textbooks. It will be sought through the bill to authorize local boards of education to purchase all school books used by the pupils in their respective school district and loan them to the school children.

100 Years

December 30, 1916

Henry Heine was elected president of the Sidney Steel Scraper Mutual Aid Society at the meeting last evening. Marion Lucas was named vice president; Asa Keplinger, recording secretary, Joseph Slonkosky, financial secretary, and C.B. Roush, treasurer.

75 Years

December 30, 1941

Leo Francis and Leo Paulus, of Russia, left today for Cincinnati where they will take final examinations after volunteering for the U.S. Marine Corps.

50 Years

December 30, 1966

County Commissioners Merton Maxwell, William Sandham and Roger Elsass held their next-to-last meeting of the year today. Commissioners worked with confidence in approving bills for they had assurance that the county would end up 1966 with a substantial balance on hand. Chairman Maxwell said commissioners do not seek undue credit for guiding the county to another surplus during the preceding months. “We have been going through a period of prosperity,” he said, “and a county government certainly should be able to live within its income under such conditions.”

25 Years

December 30, 1991

Emerging from the tragedy that took her husband’s life, Stacy Arthur has immersed herself back into her career as a representative of Playboy magazine and as an aspiring country-music singer and actress. The former Mrs. Ohio and 1991 Playboy centerfold said she still feels the presence of her husband, the late James Arthur. In recent weeks she has been commuting to Nashville, Tenn., to record demonstration tapes with a new country-music band she has formed.

The new branch of Amos Memorial Public Library on Raider Street in Russia is nearing completion. Deborah Gaier, president of the Russia Friends of the Library, said a grand opening is anticipated around the middle of February.
