SIDNEY — The Shelby County Retired Teachers Association has reported the impact of its members’ volunteerism.

The organization asks members to keep track of their volunteer hours. At bi-monthly meetings, they submit the hours and one member’s name is drawn to win a free meal at the next meeting.

During 2016, 63 retired teachers donated 8,544 hours to community efforts. The top five members were Jim Abbott, Barri Grandey, Donna Wirz, Doug Benson and Evonne Schnipple. They volunteered a combined total of 2,307 hours.

According to a formula published by the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, the economic impact of the Shelby County Retired Teachers’ work was $201,296.64.
