Staff report

FORT LORAMIE — In a key early-season County baseball matchup, Anna’s Mitchell Lindsey, with help from Joey Cummings, held Fort Loramie to just three hits and posted a 2-0 victory to run its record on the year to 2-0.

The game was the season opener for Fort Loramie, and the game was the first in league play for both.

“It was a pretty clean game,” said Loramie coach Bill Sturwold. “We couldn’t get the big hits when we needed them and Anna made some good plays.”

Anna got a run in the top of the first on a single by Aiden Endsley, and it stayed at 1-0 until the sixth, when the Rockets added an insurance run on a two-out RBI single by Caleb Kauffman, which scored Endsley.

Colin Wuebker was 3-for-4 with a double to lead Anna, and Endsley had two hits.

The Redskins managed just three singles.

Jared Middendorf was a tough-luck loser, going the distance and striking out seven for the Redskins.

Lehman 1, Northwestern 0

SPRINGFIELD — Parker Riley was 13-0 on the mound last year for the Lehman Cavaliers, and he still hasn’t tasted defeat after pitching a four-hit gem in the season opener Tuesday at Northwestern.

The Cavaliers pushed a run across in the top of the fourth and Riley did the rest in a 1-0 verdict in non-league action.

It was the first game for both. Lehman was scheduled to play Tuesday night and again Thursday against Lima Perry in Northwest Central Conference play, but both those games were postponed because of Perry’s participation in the state boys basketball tournament last week.

So now, the Cavs are off until Friday at home against New Knoxville.

“Their pitchers were tough, but Parker was just a little bit better,” said Lehman coach Dave King, whose team won despite being held to just two hits on the day.

The Cavaliers broke a scoreless deadlock in the fourth when Riley singled, then moved all the way around to third on a wild pickoff attempt. Dylan Arnold then plated him with a sacrifice fly for the game’s only run.

Riley finished with nine strikeouts and just two walks. Two Northwestern pitchers combined for seven strikeouts and three walks.

The game ended with Lehman’s Arnold getting all three putouts from his shortstop position in the bottom of the seventh. “And two of them were very good plays,” said King.

Russia 8, Houston 6

HOUSTON — The final margin of 8-6, Russia’s Raiders over Houston Tuesday night, is surprising when the 12 errors by the Wildcats are taken into consideration.

Houston had trouble fielding the ball, and Russia took advantage, scoring six unearned runs to put their record on the year at 1-0. Houston falls to 0-2.

The game was close through six innings, the two teams going to the seventh with Houston leading 6-5. But the Raiders delivered with three hits, and took advantage of two more Houston errors to score three times and pull out the win.

For the Raiders, Dion Puthoff was 2-for-3 and scored twice, and Kevin Drees had two hits.

In the key seventh, Drees, Jack Dapore and Trenton Monnin all had singles.

For Houston, Isaiah Beaver was 3-for-3 and drove in three runs and Tristan Freistuhler was 2-for-5 and scored twice.

Tecumseh 3, Sidney 0

NEW CARLISLE — Tecumseh pitcher Hunter Hensley overpowered the Sidney Yellow Jackets on Monday, throwing a five-hitter in a 3-0 victory for the Arrows.

The loss left the Jackets at 1-2 heading into a game at Chaminade on Wednesday.

Hensley struck out 12 Sidney hitters in going the distance. He got all the runs he needed in the bottom of the second, when the Arrows scored twice.

“Once again our pitching was great, and deserved a win,” said Sidney coach Thomas Goffena. “AJ Brussel came out and threw strikes and made big pitches to get out of innings. Our one error caused two unearned runs, which was the difference in the game. AJ went six strong with no earned runs, and that’s a good sign for the future. Ryan Hines came in to pitch his first varsity action and looked good also. We just need to start hitting the ball and scoring runs to back up our pitching.”

Sidney was limited to five singles by five different players.
