February jobless rate drops — a little

SIDNEY — Ohio’s unemployment rate was 5.1 percent in February 2017, up from 5.0 percent in January.

The February unemployment rate for Ohio was up 5 percent from one year ago.

Unemployment was 4.6 percent in Shelby County in February, down from 4.8 percent in January, according to the latest data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Office of Workforce Development, Bureau of Labor Market Information.

The county unemployment rate in February 2016 was 4.7 percent, which is not seasonally adjusted.

The U.S. unemployment rate for February 2017 was 4.7 percent, 0.1 percentage point lower than in January, and 0.2 percentage point lower than in February 2016.

Among the state’s 88 counties, preliminary February 2017 unemployment rates ranged from a low of 3.7 percent in Mercer County to a high of 11.8 percent in Monroe County. The comparable unemployment rate for Ohio was 5.9 percent in February.

Mercer County was the only one in Ohio in February with an unemployment rate under 4 percent. Two counties had unemployment rates at or above 10 percent in February. Meigs County’s rate was 10.2 percent.

Surrounding counties’ unemployment rates for February (compared to the January rates) were as follows: Allen, 5.8 (down from 6.2); Auglaize, 4.2 (down from 4.5); Champaign, 4.6 (down from 4.9); Darke, 5.1 (down from 5.3); Logan, 4.7 (down from 5.1); Mercer, 3.7 (down from 3.9); and Miami, 5.0 (up from 5.3).
