‘She Kills Monsters’ features journey of discovery, monsters

LIMA — The Ohio State Lima Department of Theatre’s production of “She Kills Monsters” March 31-April 1 and April 8-9 has a lot going for it – gelatinous killer cubes, goblins, angry fairies. Really, can you ask for more than giant, gooey, killer cubes?

Local students participating in the performance includes Dave Braun, senior, English, Jackson Center; and Assistant Director/Assistant Stage Manager: McKayla Kellerman, sophomore, English, Maplewood.

“She Kills Monsters” tells the story of Agnes Evans as she tries to deal with the death of her little sister, Tilly, and their parents. Agnes finds Tilly’s “Dungeons and Dragons” notebook and follows it into the imaginary world that was Tilly’s refuge. It is a comedic romp that explores and celebrates geek culture and girl power.

“She Kills Monsters” is also an action-packed comedy adventure. To bring Agnes’ path of discovery to life, Ohio State Lima students have had a chance to try their hands at high-energy sword play on stage.

“There aren’t many plays that give women the opportunity to engage in combat on stage – that was one of the things that attracted me to this play,” said Director Margie Anich, lecturer in theatre. “We’ve brought in a great fight choreographer from Toledo, Macaela Carder Whitaker, who has done a wonderful job not only teaching the students the proper, safe and effective way to create fights on stage, but has also really boosted their confidence. I love it when we not only help students build a new skill set, but help them build confidence in themselves and their ability to face challenges.”

Sweet, funny, a little raunchy and unabashedly geeky, “She Kills Monsters” will appeal to Gamers, Geeks, and those who love them. Recommended for mature audiences only, due to language and goofy stage violence.

Showtimes are 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 31; 7:30 p.m., Saturday, April 1; 7:30 p.m., Saturday, April 8, and 2 p.m., Sunday, April 9, 2017, in the Martha W. Farmer Theatre for the Performing Arts in Reed Hall.

Tickets can be purchased at the door. Box Office opens one hour before performances. Tickets prices are $7 for adults, $5 for students/seniors.
