Students to attend Career Fair, Signing Day

SIDNEY — Shelby County students will have the opportunity to attend at Career Fair and Signing Day Thursday, April 6, from9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Sidney High School.

“This is the second year in a row for this event,” said Mary Buechter, coordinator. “We decided to host it because many area businesses contact Sidney High School and want to interview our students, especially for summer jobs or jobs after graduation.”

In addition to the businesses, military branches and college representatives in attendance, students will have the opportunity to participate in signing day.

“Signing day means it is an opportunity for students to sign up for a job (or at least a second interview), sign up to apply at a school/college, or sign up for more information from the military,” she said.

The morning session is for Sidney High School students. At 9 a.m., seniors will attend the event. Juniors are up at 10 a.m., with sophomores at 11 a.m. At noon, freshmen will attend.

From 12:30 to 2 p.m., opportunity school, other Shelby County school students and Career Center students will be in attendance.

Students have been working on their resumes during class, said Buechter.

“Practice interviewing sessions and resume help has been provided over the past two months to any interested students in my Career Connections class and in the Workforce Academy program,” she said.

Buechter said some Shelby County schools are unable to participate in the program because of testing schedules. Fairlawn High School will be attending with 60 juniors and seniors.

“Last year we had 50 attendees and the reviews were extremely positive. This year we will have even more booths plus outside exhibits including a fire truck, military vehicles, a drill sergeant, a semi, and other displays,” she said.

Buechter said she is still looking for businesses to attend the event.

“Any area business that hopes to hire 14-18 year old students is welcome to attend,” she said. “I will take reservations for booths through 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 5. Interested parties may email me at [email protected] or call 937-497-2238.”
