SIDNEY — Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart has been named the Veterans of Foreign Wars District 2 Law enforcement Officer of the Year.

Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post, Shelby County Memorial Post 4239, selected Lenhart as its Law Enforcement Officer of the Year (LEO) in November 2016. Post 4239 then nominated Lenhart to be the Ohio Department, District 2 VFW LEO.

At the March District 2 meeting and awards luncheon, Lenhart was presented with a plaque recognizing him as District 2 LEO of the Year. District 2 subsequently nominated Lenhart for department (state) of Ohio LEO of the Year. VFW District 2 represents over 4,000 veterans in 22 posts in eight counties in northwest Ohio.

At the department level, Sheriff Lennart’s nomination will be reviewed along with the LEOs from the other 11 Ohio VFW Districts. If he is successful at the department level, Lenhart will be in competition with the 50 departments representing 6536 posts in the United States and around the world. The VFW is the largest organization of combat veterans in the world, representing nearly 1.7 combat veterans and auxiliary members.

The LEO recognition program is open to all law enforcement officers in Ohio.
