Ben McCullough has taken a clerkship in the New Era restaurant.

The family of the late A.J. Robertson are having plans drawn for a handsome business block on the site of the present home and marble ship – on the southwest corner of Court Street and Ohio Avenue. The building will be three stories, 41 by 112 feet. It will contain business rooms and offices, and the family will also live there. The Peoples Savings and Loan Association will have its offices in the new structure. The marble business will be continued for a time on the opposite side of Ohio Avenue.

100 Years

May 5, 1917

The new post office building, recently completed, will be open for public inspection tomorrow evening between 7 and 9 o’clock, Postmaster Val Lee announced today. The employees will be on duty to show visitors through the various departments. Postmasters from throughout the district have also been invited along with officials at Dayton and Cincinnati. The latter will be entertained at the banquet at the regular meeting of the Commercial club.

Mrs. C.F. Hickok was elected president of the Junior Shakespeare club, when the members met yesterday at the home of Miss Edith Silver. Miss Silver was elected vice president; Mrs. Jean Carothers, secretary; and Mrs. Carl Custenborder, treasurer.

75 Years

May 5, 1942

The nine-room home of Mrs. And Mrs. J.J. Gusinger, at Swanders, burned to the ground yesterday afternoon. Neighbors were able to carry most of the furniture from the first floor, but nothing was saved from the second. Kettlersville and Fort Loramie firemen responded to the call and succeeded in saving nearby buildings which were threatened.

50 Years

May 5, 1967

NEW BREMEN – Theresa Shelby, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Shelby, has been named queen of the annual New Bremen Festival and Homecoming sponsored each year by the Woodmen of the World.

Making up the queen’s court are Betty Schwartz, Janet Lampert, Mary Podoll, Kay Heinfeld, Shirli Topp and Janis Mussett.

William F. Kingseed, 511 South Main Avenue, was recognized for his more than 35 years of service to the First National Exchange Bank at a dinner Thursday night arranged by his associates at the Piqua Country Club.

Kingseed, who recently retired under the bank’s compulsory retirement program, served as a member of the board of directors since January 1932. He retains his association with the bank as a director emeritus and a member of the finance committee.

May 5, 1992

Sidney Mayor Doris Blackston was part of a 120-member delegation from the districts served by U.S. Rep. Michael Oxley, R-Findlay, 4th District, and U.S. Rep. John Boehner, R-West Chester, 8th District, who visited Washington, D.C., last Sunday and Monday.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department recently received the Outstanding Sponsor Award for its Explorer Scout post, sponsoring a post for the past 14 years.

Sheriff Mark Schemmel received the award from the Miami Valley Council of Boy Scouts for the department’s involvement in the Explorer Scout post. The award was presented during a recent Explorer Scout recognition banquet in Dayton.
