SIDNEY — The Tawawa Park Runners recently announced its scholarship winners for graduating senior runners from the class of 2017.
They are Shaelyn Goubeaux, a member of the Russia Lady Raider cross-county and track teams, Anna Rocket Lucas Huber and Lehman Catholic Cavalier Brandon Simmons.
Goubeaux, daughter of Chandra and Wesley Goubeaux, of Houston, received a $1,000 award. Huber, son of Chris and Randy Huber, of Anna, and Simmons, son of Susan and Joseph Simmons, of Piqua, each won $500 scholarships.
Tawawa Park Runners is a group of local athletes who incorporated in 1999 as a not-for-profit corporation for the purpose of supporting high school cross-country and track athletes. The group conducts a race on the first Saturday of August each year to raise funds for its scholarships. The race this year will be Aug. 5 in Tawawa Park.
Goubeaux had an outstanding cross-country and track career at Russia High School. The Lady Raiders were league cross-country champions all four years, district champions four straight years, and made four straight state appearances in cross-country. She also made two appearances at the state track meet.
Anna Coach Dean Stewart noted that Huber “qualified for the state championships in cross-country four times, earning All-Ohio honors and regional honors in track twice.” Simmons was the captain of Lehman’s cross-country team. He received a Coaches Award for his leadership in cross-country. He was All-Conference in cross-country one year.
The scholarships will be presented to the individuals at the race, which will start at 8a.m.
