July 15, 1892

The Tawawa Fishing and Boating Club opened their club house last evening. About 300 people were present. The grounds were profusely decorated. Torches and Chinese lanterns were placed in all parts around the lake. Music was provided by a “Dutch Band” located on a boat in the lake. The club was organized for pleasure and not for profit. It is a private affair and is only to be used by members, their families and guests.

The ballot to be voted at the election in Ohio next November will probably be as large as any that will ever be used in the state. It will contain the names of 23 presidential electors for each of four political parties, with a large number of party nominations for state officers, members of Congress and various county officers to be chosen this year.

100 Years

July 15, 1917

Dickensheets and Son will be the new name of the Dickensheets grocery on the east side of the square. For the past 16 years, H.N. Dickensheets has conducted the business operation. The fact that his son, Johnston, has joined him as a partner is the reason for the change in the name.

East Sidney was the scene of two burglaries and an attempted burglary in another case last night. The homes of Clyde Clawson and Oscar Lanfersieck were entered and several personal items taken, according to an initial check of the premises. Barking dogs are believed to have frightened the would-be burglars from the home of C.O. Sayre, where the attempted entry was made.

Commencing next Monday, the Union Delivery in Sidney will be discontinued and each grocer will make his own deliveries. Those who have procured delivery trucks include: Arcade Grocery, H.N. Dickensheets, Kingseed Grocery and Sam Piper. Those trucks are painted difference colors for identification.

75 Years

July 15, 1942

City council at its regular meeting last night passed unanimously an ordinance fixing the salaries of police and firemen. The ordinance provides for six policemen at a salary of $140 per month, and the chief of police at $160 per month; six firemen at a salary of $140 per month; two assistant fire chiefs at $145 per month, and fire chief, $160 per month.

The C.D. Beck Co. was advised this afternoon by the War Production Board in Washington, that is production of buses beyond July 18 was approved. Originally the company had been advised to stop all production on July 18, and steps to shut down the operation had already been taken. Beck indicated he expects to get back into full production within a few days as soon as he is advised by the WPB of his exact quota.

The Navy Department’s official summary of the battle of Midway left no doubt today it was the greatest sea victory in American history. Japanese losses in the furious three-day battle in the mid-Pacific were listed as four aircraft carriers and at least 16 other warships and auxiliary vessels destroyed or damaged. The United States lost the carrier “Yorktown” and a destroyer sunk.

50 Years

July 15, 1967

JACKSON CENTER – Janice Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Davis of South Main street here, leaves Sunday by plane for Ottawa, Canada. Miss Davis, a teacher at Springcreek school in Miami county, will be advisor to a group of four 11-year-old delegates from that country to the Children’s International Summer Village in Ottawa. Miss Davis, a 1962 graduate of Jackson Center High school, graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1966.

25 Years

July 15, 1992

Anna local school board officials have announced the adoption of a five-year technology plan. It will be implemented in three phases over the five years. Ultimately, over 220 work stations will be developed that are technology-friendly. These will benefit both students and teachers. An eleven-member committee has put together the five-year technology plan.

It was a thrilling rescue. Two men were pulled from the Great Miami River yesterday. Larry Lawson and a juvenile were in a canoe. It capsized and the pair were carried down the swiftly moving waters. They managed to land on an island in the middle of the river. Rescue personnel were able to get them safely to shore.
