State unemployment rates rise

SIDNEY — Ohio’s unemployment rate was 5 percent in June 2017, up slightly from 4.9 percent in May 2017.

The June unemployment rate for Ohio rose .1 percent from the June 2016 rate.

Unemployment was at 4.4 percent in Shelby County in June, up from 3.9 percent in May, according to the latest data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Office of Workforce Development, Bureau of Labor Market Information.

The U.S. unemployment rate for June 2017 was 4.4 percent, 0.1 percentage point higher than in June 2017, and 0.5 percentage point lower than in June 2016.

Among the state’s 88 counties, preliminary June 2017 unemployment rates, not seasonally adjusted, ranged from a low of 3.4 percent in Mercer County to a high of 8.2 percent in Meigs County. From May, unemployment rates increased in all but four of Ohio’s 88 counties. Ottawa, Hamilton, Monroe and Defiance counties all saw slight decreases. The comparable unemployment rate for Ohio was 5.4 percent in June.

Four counties had unemployment rates below 4 percent in June. The counties with the lowest rates, other than Mercer were Putnam, 3.7 percent, and Holmes, Hancock and Wyandot, 3.9 percent.

Eight counties had unemployment rates above 7.0 percent in June. The counties with the highest rates, other than Meigs were Jefferson, 7.5 percent; Coshocton and Jackson, 7.2 percent; Athens, 7.3 percent; Pike, 7.1 percent; Scioto, 7.4 percent; and Monroe, 8.1 percent.

Surrounding counties’ unemployment rates for June (compared to May rates) were as follows: Allen, 5.3 (up from 4.6); Auglaize, 4.0 (up from 3.4); Champaign, 4.4 (up from 3.8); Darke, 4.4 (up from 3.8); Logan 4.4 (up from 3.7); Mercer, 3.4 (up from 2.8); and Miami, 4.6 (up from 3.9).
