SIDNEY — When Sidney Daily News staff saw a dress made from newspaper pages for a Girl Scout entry at the Shelby County Fair, recently, they thought the project should be acknowledged.
Lena Stangel, 16, daughter of Karen and Jason Stangel, of rural Houston, created the dress for submission in the Recycle This category of fair entries. A member of Troop 2351 in Houston, she earned an A ribbon, with $3 in fair vouchers, for her efforts.
She also received a Sidney Daily News umbrella from Editor Melanie Speicher at the newspaper offices, Tuesday, Aug. 1.
“We love to see the creativity of the young people in Shelby County,” said Speicher. “And we appreciate that once the paper was read in the Stangel household, Lena found a creative way for it to have a new life.”
“It took about four hours to make and I used 14 pages of newspaper,” Stangel said. They were from two June issues. The dress, in a child’s size, featured a bouffant skirt, a tight bodice, and wide shoulder straps attached to the bodice with rosettes.
“I got the idea from pictures on Pinterest,” Stangel said. The junior at Houston High School also won a best of class ribbon at the fair for her toothpick painting of a landscape at sunset.
