It’s back to school for local students

SIDNEY — The school bells will be ringing for more students in Shelby and Auglaize counties this week.

Lehman Catholic

Lehman Catholic High School students will return to class Tuesday, Aug. 22.

Welcoming the students back to school will be seven new staff members. Joining the Lehman family are Ryan Jenkins, vocal music; Kari Kruer, social studies; The Rev. Peter Langenkamp, school chaplain and religion teacher; Ellie Waldsmith, business; Ryan Wendel, instrumental music; Anne Westerheide, development specialist; and Andrea Wilmer, development coordinator.

Facility updates started or completed over the summer includes the ​STEM+MM Wing, phase one of construction in progress; soccer field, new scoreboard and bleachers; new facility outdoor lights; and outdoor Stations of the Cross, which will be dedicated and blessed at Under the Lights III in September.

New programs and classes for the students include introduction to health science, which is a college credit plus class with Edison State; engineering innovations, which receives articulated credit with University of Dayton; and introduction to food science, which is a college credit plus class with Wright State University.

The annual Beanie Weenie | Meet the Teachers and Teams Night will be held Aug. 23. On Sept. 21-24, the Under the Lights III (homecoming) is being planned. The annual Harvest Auction will be Oct. 28.

On Feb. 7, the open house for prospective students will be held. On May 25, the baccalaureate Mass and senior awards program is planned. Graduation is set for May 27.

New Knoxville Local Schools

New Knoxville Local School starts the new school year on Tuesday, Aug. 22. Throughout the school year find information on the school’s website concerning upcoming events, daily announcements, forms and much more. www.nkrangers.org.

A Back-to-School Night is scheduled for students in grade K-6 on Monday, Aug. 21 from 6 to 7 p.m. Students can bring in their school supplies and meet their teacher.

Two new staff members have joined the New Knoxville staff, Kaylee Shoff and Jennifer Koesters.

Koesters is a graduate of Marion Local High School. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Ball State University with a major in secondary mathematics education and a minor in Spanish. She has a master’s degree in special education from Bowling Green State University. She had previously taught math at Mississinewa High School in Gas City, Indiana, and Franklin Monroe Junior High/High School in Pitsburg, Ohio. She resides in Maria Stein with her husband, Greg, and 16-month-old-daughter, Addison.

Shoff will be teaching elementary art and music for the 2017-2018 school year. Additionally, she will be helping coach New Knoxville soccer as an assistant coach. She earned my degree at Ohio University in Athens in 2016. Originally from Pickerington, Ohio, she moved to Auglaize County at the beginning of 2017 and began subbing at New Knoxville and Minster schools.

The seventh- and eighth-grade students will be taking a new class offering this school year. They will get the opportunity to have a 9 weeks of STEM and learn hands-on activities incorporating science, technology, engineering and math.

“The entire staff has worked hard to prepare for the first day of school,” said Superintendent Kim Waterman. “I want to sincerely thank the entire New Knoxville staff. It takes everyone to make this school a special place to work and one of the best schools in the state!”

New Bremen Local Schools

Students attending New Bremen Local Schools will return to classes on Wednesday, Aug. 23. An open house is planned for Monday, Aug. 21, from 7 to 8 p.m.

There will be no school on Monday, Sept. 4, because of the Labor Day holiday/

Karla Grieshop is the district’s new speech-language pathologist.

The district has reorganized its principals into a k-8, 9-12 configuration. The district reduced the middle school principal position when Jason Schrader was hired as superintendent. Diane Kramer will be K-8 principal and Brian Pohl will be the principal for grades 9-12.

“Our community passed a bond levy in May to construct a new K-8 facility,” said Schrader. “We received an A1 rating from Moody’s in July. Our bonds were sold on Aug. 15, 2017. We are currently in the process of hiring an architect and hope to have that completed by mid October. We are also in the process of hiring a construction manager at risk (CMR). We anticipate having the CMR selected in early December.”

Minster Local Schools

The first day of school for students attending Minster Local Schools is Wednesday, Aug. 23. Back to school night will be held Monday, Aug. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. for elementary school students.

There will be no school on Monday, Sept. 4, for the Labor Day holiday. There will also be no school on Monday, Oct. 9, for a teacher in-service day.

Dr. Jason Spencer has joined the staff as the new principal for grades 7 to 12. He is returning to Ohio after serving as a high school principal in Florida.

Alicia Everman is the new psychologist for the district. She will also be serving New Knoxville Local Schools.

Mandy Bornhorst is the new kindergarten teacher. Chelsea Oren is the physical education/health teacher. Tyler Karhoff will be teaching high school math. Annette Moran is the evening custodian for the elementary school.

Josh Clune is the new director of student services. He will also be the district’s transportation director and continue as athletic director. He had been the district’s physical education/health teacher.
