Midwest Electric awards $11,000 in scholarships

ST. MARYS — Spencerville High School’s Rebecca Stetler and Wapakoneta High School’s Michael Johnston captured top honors in the 2018 Midwest Electric scholarship competition, featuring judges from Wright State University-Lake Campus and Midwest Electric.

The two seniors each received a $2,000 scholarship. Johnston will represent Midwest Electric in the Ohio Electric Cooperatives statewide scholarship competition in Columbus this spring.

Second place $1,500 scholarships were awarded to Lauren Bruns, Coldwater High School, and Jacob Meyer, Coldwater High School. Receiving third place $1,000 scholarship awards were Alli Schlosser, St. Marys Memorial High School, and Hunter Wendel, Coldwater High School.

The six general scholarship winners were selected from a field of 45 area high school seniors, with a 3.5 or higher-grade point average, whose parents are Midwest Electric members.

Additionally, Kateland Keene, St. Marys Memorial High School, won the $2,000 Touchstone Energy Achievement Scholarship, which is awarded to a student who has overcome a significant challenge in pursuit of their goals. Kateland, the daughter of Angela Kohlreiser, is considering pre-med or biology for a college major.

Stetler is considering a number of colleges and is undecided on a major. She has a 4.0 grade point average and is ranked first in her class. She is the daughter of Doug and Martha Stetler, St. Marys.

Johnston will study mechanical engineering or political science. He has a 4.0 grade point average, is fourth in his class, and is the son of Wes and Karen Johnston, Lima.

Bruns is considering a few Ohio colleges to study pharmacy. She has a 4.26 grade point average and is first in her class. Her parents are Andy and Jenny Bruns, Fort Recovery.

Meyer will study computer science at Miami University. He has a 4.1 grade point average, is ranked 10th in his class and is the son of Dan and Brenda Meyer, Coldwater.

Schlosser has a 4.67 grade point average and is second in her class. She is planning to study physical therapy. Alli is the daughter of Scott and Sheri Schlosser, St. Marys.

Wendel is the son of David and Carla Wendel, Fort Recovery. He has a 4.16 grade point average, is fourth in his class and is planning to study chemical or electrical engineering at the University of Toledo.

Based in St. Marys, Midwest Electric is the customer-owned electric cooperative for 11,000 homes, farms and businesses in Allen, Auglaize, Mercer, Van Wert, Shelby, Putnam and Darke counties.
