MINSTER — Four consecutive touchdowns helped Minster pull away from Covington in a 39-26 nonconference win on Friday at Memorial Stadium.
Alex Schmitmeyer ran for four touchdowns and Jacob Niemeyer threw for two TDs in the win. The Wildcats had 431 yards of offense and intercepted Covington quarterback Cade Schmelzer four times.
Covington took an early 6-0 lead after a 5-yard touchdown run by Brayden Wiggins. Schmitmeyer scored a short touchdown run late in the first to put Minster ahead 7-6, then Niemeyer threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to August Boehnlein 30 seconds into the second quarter.
Schmitmeyer ran for a 6-yard touchdown with 9:36 left in the second and Niemeyer threw a 40-yard pass to Trent Roetgerman with 7:18 left.
Covington pulled within 27-12 late in the second quarter, but Schmitmeyer scored two 6-yard touchdown runs in the second half to push Minster’s lead to 39-12. The Buccaneers scored two touchdowns in the final four minutes to narrow the final score.
Schmitmeyer ran for 151 yards on 23 carries while Niemeyer completed 12-of-17 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns.
Mike Ketner had three interceptions for Minster while Roetgerman had one.
The Wildcats (2-0) will open Midwest Athletic Conference play next Friday at home against Fort Recovery (2-0).
Fort Loramie 45, Cincinnati Madeira 29
The Redskins jumped out to a big lead over Cincinnati Madeira on Friday and finished up a nonconference victory on Saturday.
Fort Loramie led 28-3 early in the third quarter when lightning caused the conclusion of the game to be postponed to Saturday. Madeira found more offensive success on Saturday, but the Redskins scored two touchdowns to stave off any comeback attempts.
Sophomore quarterback Collin Moore scored on a 1-yard run with 6:30 left in the fourth to put the Redskins up 38-15 and later scored on an 8-yard run with 1:35 left to boost the lead to 45-21.
Devin Wehrman scored on a 2-yard run with 10:52 left in the third to increase Fort Loramie’s lead to 25 points before lightning came on Friday.
Moore threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Carter Mescher late in the first quarter to give the Redskins an early lead. After a Madeira field goal, Mescher returned the kickoff 99 yards to push the lead to 14-3. Moore scored on a 1-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter to increase the lead to 21-3 at halftime.
Fort Loramie (1-1) will host Covington (0-2) next Friday to open Cross County Conference play.
New Bremen 28, Mississinawa Valley 8
The Cardinals scored four touchdowns in the first quarter to take an early lead in a dominating performance on Friday in a home nonconference contest.
New Bremen had 404 yards of offense, with 237 on the ground and 167 through the air.
Nolan Bornhorst accounted for all passing yards by completing 6 of 13 passes with four touchdowns and one interception. He also ran for 32 yards on three carries. Justin Tenkman led New Bremen rushing-wise with 79 yards on nine carries with one TD.
Bornhorst threw 16-yard and 28-yard touchdown passes to Grant Selby and a 58-yard yard TD pass to Logan Suchland in the first quarter. Tenkman also scored on a 28-yard run to help the Cardinals amass a 28-0 lead.
Mitchell Hays scored on a 29-yard touchdown run with 4:06 left in the second and Bornhorst threw a 47-yard TD pass to Bryce Blickle right before halftime to put a running clock on in the second half.
The Blackhawks had 197 yards of offense. Nicholas Wells led New Bremen with four tackles.
New Bremen (2-0) will host Anna (1-1) next Friday to open MAC play.
Miami East 52, Lehman Catholic 21
The Vikings scored three touchdowns in the first quarter to run away early. The Cavaliers scored all their touchdowns in the third quarter to pull within 45-21, but Miami East scored another TD in the fourth to push the final margin over 30 points.
The win is Miami East’s first over Lehman since 1990.
Lehman (0-2) will travel to Graham (1-1) next Friday for a nonconference game.
Quarterback Ian Gengler put the Vikings (2-0) on the board roughly four minutes in on a 15-yard touchdown run, then Kaleb Nickels scored on an 8-yard run in the middle of the first quarter. Gengler then hit Nickels with a 20-yard touchdown pass in the closing seconds of the first, giving East a 21-0 lead after one. Wes Sutherly then kicked a 21-yard field goal with less than a minute remaining in the half to put the Vikings up 24-0 at the break.
Lehman (0-2) answered in the third quarter — but each time they did, Miami East’s Justin Brown had a counter.
Elliott Gilardi hit Bradly Haynes with a 9-yard touchdown pass at the 9:58 mark to put Lehman on the board, but Brown broke a 51-yard touchdown run at 9:11 in response. Gilardi again hit Haynes for a score, this time a 44-yarder with 8:10 on the clock, but Brown answered with a 30-yard touchdown jaunt at 6:04 to make it 38-14.
Gilardi scored on a 10-yard run to make it a 17-point game one last time at 3:32, but Brown broke a back-breaking 54-yard touchdown run at 3:20 to make it 45-21 heading into the fourth, and Vincent Villella added the only score of the final quarter, a 16-yard touchdown run, to seal it.
Miami East’s offense outgained Lehman 506-362 in the slugfest. Brown led the way with 231 rushing yards on 15 carries and Villella had 159 yards on 19 carries.
Gilardi was Lehman’s offense in the game, going 23 for 31 passing for 287 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions and adding 72 of the team’s 75 rushing yards on 16 carries.
Mechanicsburg 42, Riverside 0
The Indians started slow but pulled away late against Riverside in a nonconference game on Friday.
Midway through the first quarter, a Riverside fumble led to a 68-yard touchdown pass from Logan Hurst to Keith Bebout.
Mechanicsburg’s Joey Mascadri scored on a one-yard run at 9:34 of the second quarter to make it 14-0. He added a six-yard scoring run with 2:19 left in the second quarter to give the Indians a 21-0 lead.
The Indians scored three more times in the second half.
Riverside (0-2) has been shut out in both its games this season. The Pirates will host Indian Lake (0-2) next Friday.
Versailles 47, Delphos Jefferson 14
The Tigers routed Jefferson in their home opener on Friday. Versailles jumped out to a 33-6 lead by halftime.
Eight players helped Versailles amass 242 rushing yards, and Ryan Martin completed 8 of 13 passes for 155 yards and one touchdown.
Jake Poling led the Tigers’ rushing attack with 65 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns. Marin, Derek Davin, Jack Barga and Hunter Trump also ran for touchdowns. Cavin finished with 54 rushing yards on three carries while Trump finished with 45 yards on seven carries.
Evan Hiestand caught three passes for 73 yards while and Cavin caught one pass for 34 yards. Michael Stammen had two receptions for 22 yards and one touchdown.
Jefferson finished with -33 rushing yards on 24 carries and had 133 passing yards on six completions.
Hiestand led Versailles with nine tackles, while Cavin had five. Jared Siebert and Trump each had four.
Versailles (1-1) will open MAC play next Friday at home against Coldwater (2-0).
