Students brighten up day for nursing home residents

SIDNEY — Holy Angels School’s students recently brighten up the day for local nursing home residents.

“I requested a grant from Cargill Cares to have each student produce inspirational artwork and pieces to gift the nursing home residents in our community,” said Kara Wiley, Holy Angels School art teacher. “With the assistance of team leader Andrea Guckes, who is with the Cargill Cares Appropriations group, our art department was gifted $600 to carry out the mission I designed. With this grant our students produced 236 art pieces to gift the residents.

“It was my intent for the students of Holy Angels to create each piece to learn the concept of stewardship and to build a strong foundation to serve others. I hoped that students would find a deeper meaning and purpose in their artwork knowing those that would receive them would feel uplifted. The outreach project took on much significance for the students as they learned how to put their heart and soul into the creations to give those who needed a reminder that they are ‘God’s Masterpiece.’ Ultimately, the project demonstrated the Lord’s everlasting love for those whom he created,” she said.

Every nursing home resident at the Landings, the Pavillion, Fair Haven and Sidney Care Center received one of three items. The students made three types of projects: fleece pillows, cross sun catchers, and “Jesus Loves Me,” plush pillows. They also decorated gift bags for each of the smaller items with encouraging words of hope and faith.

“On behalf of myself and the Holy Angels Art Students, we would like to thank Cargill for making this vision possible,” said Wiley.
