December 21, 1896

The Sidney Carriage Body company furnished the Peabody Carriage company at Fostoria this week with a carriage body which will be put into a carriage ordered from them by President-elect William McKinley. The carriage will be given by Mr. McKinley to his mother as a present.

Five new cases of diphtheria were reported this morning. One is in the First Ward; two in the Second Ward; one in the Third Ward, and one in the Fourth Ward.

100 years

December 21, 1921

Mayor Forsyth is making arrangements to clear out everything in the back room of the mayor’s office before he retires from that office on Jan. 1. In the stuff that is now there are several gallons of corn whiskey, hooch and homemade wine, confiscated in raids in Sidney and Shelby County. Under the direction of Chief O’Leary, the liquor will be dumped into the gutter on the last day of the year.

The Red Cross has found it impossible, on account of the large number of needy families, to bring before the public the needs of each family as there are to date 190 families on the list. The Kiwanis Club has taken 65 families to date.

75 years

December 21, 1946

Rev. Arthur T. Gerhold, of Buffalo, N.Y., has accepted the call to the pastorate of the St. Paul’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Sidney. He has served the Buffalo church for eight years.

Sidney High’s basketeers began their holiday vacation today with the satisfaction of having compiled one of the best pre-Christmas records since the 1937 Yellow Jacket aggregation won the Miami Valley League title. Paul Watson’s crew staged a spectacular second-half rally last night in turning back St. Marys 36-31 for their fifth win in six starts.

December 21, 1971

The home of Mrs. Don Strausser was the setting for the December meeting of Charity League. Guests for the evening were the new associate members, Mrs. Gary Paul, Mrs. Philip Ruese and Mrs. Thomas Dunnavant.

A 36-year veteran of the State Highway Department has been named employee of the month for Division 7 by Deputy Director William F. Wagner. He is Elwood G. Young, who began work for the highway department in 1935 as an instrument man for Robert Stoltz. Young lives at 1314 Garfield Avenue, Sidney.

25 years

December 21, 1996

With money added for the possible purchase of the Cameo Theatre for use as a senior citizens center, Sidney City Council is set to approve the 1997 appropriations ordinance at Monday night’s meeting. City Manager Michael Morton said the city is currently negotiating for the possible purchase of the Cameo Theatre from Monarch Machine Tool Co.

Mutual Federal Savings Bank opened its newest full-service banking office inside Kroger’s grocery Friday with a special grand opening ceremony. According to Randy A. Herron, chief executive officer, the new bank office is one of the more advanced in technology, styling and location within a retail setting. It is located to the left as customers enter the Kroger’s store.
