Those people who do teaming should remember the rules about hauling on the pikes when the frost is coming out of the ground. More damage can be done to the pikes in a few days by injudicious hauling on them at this season of the year than all the balance of the year.

Members of the Maple Rebekah Lodge, I.O.O.F. held a poverty social in their hall last night. It was attended by a very large crowd. The greater portion of those present were dressed in the oldest and most worn out clothes that could be secured and the entire crowd appeared as the most poverty stricken set of people ever seen by anyone.

The United States Senate on Saturday passed a bill for the relief of George S. Simon of Versailles, authorizing the court of claims to hear and determine the amount of loss suffered by him by the raiding of his store in January 1864 by a number of Pennsylvania troops on their way home on furlough.

100 Years

February 8, 1922

Meeting in the assembly room of the court house yesterday afternoon, the visiting Nurses Association named the following officers for the year: Mrs. J.W. Well, president; Mrs. E.T. Custenborder, vice president; Mrs. Urban H. Doorley, recording secretary; Mrs. C.E. Wilkinson, financial secretary, and Mrs. Ray Comstock, treasurer. Various committees were appointed and the yearly report presented by Margaret Rinchart and Maude Spence.

Public utility companies in Shelby county – the concerns that furnish gas, electric light and power, transportation and communication, serviced – will pay $79,217 in taxes this year, according to a report from County Auditor W.A. Harmon. This represents an increase of $11, 328 over the previous year.

At the meeting of the Men’s League of St. Paul’s Church on Thursday evening, George Quatman, of the Sidney Telephone Company, will give an instructive talk on the operation of the telephone.

February 8, 1947

Ohio’s industrial production, factory employment and transportation facilities were struck another staggering blow today as the mercury plummeted to new below-zero marks for the season. Continuation of the severe cold dimmed hopes for a resumption of industries closed down by the shortage of gas.

Farm prices generally will decline but slightly during 147, although butter, eggs, pork and dairy products will take tumbles, L.H. Barnes rural economist from Ohio State University, pointed out yesterday when he spoke to Shelby county farmers at the Anna school.

A program of extensive additions in equipment and facilities for the taking of photographs needed by national advertisers has been completed and is now ready for full use it was announced today by Homer English of the English studio in the Ohio building. At the same time, English announced plans for a week-long open house in connection with the formal opening.

February 8, 1972

Robert J. Kupper, 14 East Clay street, Sidney, failed to win a $600 Lucky Barrel prize when he had not registered at the Steinle Drug Store on South Main avenue. His name was drawn from the Barrel Tuesday evening.

Thomas R. Smith an 18-year-old senior at Sidney High School, has been selected at an alternate to the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md. Smith is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Smith, Jr. of 702 McKinley avenue, Sidney.

Timothy C. Adams son of Mr. and Mrs. Alga Adams, Jr., 618 North Oak avenue, Sidney has been elected president of the Inter-Fraternity Council at Tri-State College, Angola, Indiana.

February 8, 1997

The All American City Chapter of Sidney was invited to participate in a coaching demonstration for the Region 4 Sweet Adeline Winter Warm-up meeting held January 18 in Columbus.

Sidney coach Jim McCracken called it his team’s best overall dual meet of the season, wrestlers coming through from top to bottom in a 18-20 crunching of the Troy Trojans in Greater Miami Valley Conference action Thursday before an excellent Senior Night crowd at the high school.

Students at Bridgeview Middle School are learning the process of producing a newspaper from start to finish.

Over 34 students with the Chamber Enrichment Team have spent the past few weeks talking with Sidney Daily News personnel to learn how to write and publish a newspaper.
