The two puncheons, one each of port and claret California wine, that William Shine received last week could not be put in the doors of any of his cellars on account of their size. The wine is being put up in bottles and jugs today. It will require about 1,200 bottles and 300 jugs to hold it.

William Piper has returned from New York where he has been laying in a supply of new spring goods.

100 Years

March 1, 1922

The second of the series of three games between the basketball teams of the Phi Delta fraternity and the American Legion will be played at the armory on Friday evening. The American Legion team edged out a one-point victory in the first contest last week.

Members of the Missionary Society of the Presbyterian Church elected Mrs. J.J. Bush president, when they met yesterday afternoon. Mrs. G.A. Lohmire was named vice president; Mrs. W.B. Love, secretary, and Mrs. M.R. Line, treasurer.

75 Years

March 1, 1947

With Harry Poultson, of Lima, as the guest speaker, the Shelby County chapter of the American Red Cross opened its 1947 campaign last evening. Judge Huber Beery is serving as chairman for this year’s drive which has a goal of $10,800.

W.R. Joslin, president of the Pioneer Rural Electric Cooperative, Inc., board of directors for the past 10 years, was re-elected to that post when the board reorganized last evening. L.U. Hill was elected first vice president.

Rehearsals for the senior class play, “What a Life,” have started at Sidney High School under the direction of Miss Olive Owens. Members of the cast include: Lee Kaufman, Marilyn Beck, George Long, Ralph Cole, Eleanor Aschenbach. Nancy Foster, Bob Casper, Rolland Swonger, Carlene Miller, Bob Althoff, Phyllis Knoop, Charles Abbott, Mary Jo Lippincott, Dolores Taylor, Jo Lerch, Bob Dormire, and Alberta Laws.

RUSSIA – Dennis York has been re-appointed deputy registrar for motor vehicles for the Russia area.

Frank J. Gleason, Jr. has been named general chairman of the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA’s $850,000 building fund campaign, it was announced today by

Thomas L. Watkins, president of the Y board of directors.

25 Years

March 1, 1997

A Sidney High School team won the Tecumseh Social Studies Shootout Saturday, repeating last year’s championship performance. The team defeated Vandalia twice to retain the championship. The student scholars are led by advisor Lee Miller. Members of Sidney A are Mike Nartker (captain), Jason Blindauer, Fred Stewart and Brett Bickel. Three of the four members were on last year’s winning team.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) – FBI supervisor Earl Pitts pleaded guilty Friday to conspiring and attempting to sell classified secrets to Russia and the former Soviet Union, and a former CIA station chief is expected to plead guilty to spying for Russia on Monday.

Joe Glass, Chief of the Lockington Volunteer Fire Department, was named Firefighter of the Year by the Shelby County Firefighters Association at its annual banquet at the Sidney American Legion Hall.

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church has a new priest, and the church is involved in a new experiment. David Brower has assumed the duties for the church. The church has decided to get involved with ‘clustering.’ He will also serve churches in Piqua and Greenville, Ohio. Rev. Brower recently moved here from Michigan.
