ST. MARYS – Grand Lake Health System has been named one of America’s Best Hospitals for Emergency Care and Patient Safety by the Women’s Choice Award, America’s trusted referral source for the best in healthcare. The awards signify that Grand Lake Health System is in the top 3% offering emergency care services and 9% for patient safety in safe surgery practices and lower rates for complications and infections out of 4,729 U.S. hospitals.

Each year, there are more than 130 million emergency room visits in the United States. Emergency departments continue to be an essential part of the healthcare system as they provide fast, life-or-limb saving care to millions each year. Unlike other hospital departments that interact with the same patient and families for an extended period, ER staff typically have one patient encounter, often when anxiety and fear is at its peak.

Criteria for selecting Grand Lake Health System as one of America’s Best included the percentage of patients who came to the emergency department with stroke symptoms and received results within 45 minutes of arrival. Also included this year were hospitals that performed well in responding to patients showing symptoms of severe sepsis, a very dangerous condition. The awarded hospitals represent those with emergency departments with average measures in the highest 25th to 50th percentile in the country. The award is especially significant given that long waits and high crowding can negatively impact patient outcomes, including patients leaving without receiving medical treatment, longer overall length of hospital stay and an increase in mortality rates.

“Grand Lake Health System not only performed well clinically with regard to emergency care measures, but they also have a high recommendation rating, which is very important to women when it comes to health-related decisions” says Delia Passi, Founder and CEO of the Women’s Choice Award.

Grand Lake Health System is one of 417 award recipients representing the hospitals that have met the highest standards for emergency care in the U.S. by the Women’s Choice Award.

The methodology for America’s Best Hospitals for Emergency Care award is unique in that it combines Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey results with primary research about women’s healthcare preferences. The award recognizes excellence in emergency care based on several process of care measures focused on time patients spent in the emergency department.

To be selected as one of the Best Hospitals for Patient Safety is unique in that it evaluates 12 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) measures of infections and complications, Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey results, and primary research about women’s healthcare preferences. It is the only award recognizing excellence in patient safety based on robust criteria that consider patient satisfaction and clinical excellence.

“Not all hospitals can say they are the safest in the country, and by identifying those who are, the Women’s Choice Award is helping the female consumer identify the hospitals in her community that are dedicated to creating the safest patient experience,” said Delia Passi, Founder and CEO of the Women’s Choice Award. “The recipients of the America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Safety award have led the country by implementing safe practices that have ultimately saved lives,” said Passi. “This recognition is critical for women as they make over 80% of healthcare decisions and need to know they are putting themselves—and their family members—in the safest hands.”

Grand Lake Health System is one of 487 award recipients representing the hospitals that have met the highest standards for patient safety in the U.S. by the Women’s Choice Award. “We are very proud to have been named one of America’s Best Hospitals for both Emergency Care and Patient Safety by the Women’s Choice Award. Our physicians and staff work hard every day to provide quality care and excellent service to our patients. Earning national recognition validates our commitment to providing exceptional care close to home, “says Cindy Berning, CEO of Joint Township District Memorial Hospital.
