Thursday/Friday basketball roundup: Botkins beats Anna in SCAL finale

ANNA — Botkins took control early and beat Anna 55-40 in both teams’ Shelby County Athletic League finales on Friday.

The Trojans led 14-6 at the end of the first quarter, 21-13 at halftime and 35-29 at the end of the third quarter.

Carter Pleiman led the Trojans with 15 points while Jordan Herzog scored 12 and JJ Meyer scored 10.

The Trojans finished SCAL play with a 7-5 record and tied Fort Loramie for third place.

Anna finished regular season with a 7-15 overall record and 4-8 SCAL record, good for a fifth-place finish.

Anna statistics were not reported.

Sidney 69, Greenville 59

The Yellow Jackets had a big fourth quarter to break a nine-game losing streak and win their regular-season and Miami Valley League finale on Friday in Greenville.

Sidney led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter, but the Green Wave used an 18-15 edge in the second to take a 30-29 halftime lead. Sidney used a 16-15 edge in the third to tie it, then outscored Greenville 24-14 in the fourth to pull away to a 10-point win.

The Yellow Jackets finished regular-season play with an 8-14 overall record and 7-11 MVL record, good for a third-place finish in Valley Division standings.

Russia 39, Fort Loramie 37

Xavier Phlipot made a basket with just under a minute left to break a 37-37 tie, and the Raiders held off Fort Loramie the rest of the way to win an SCAL game on Friday and secure a share of the league title.

The Raiders built an early 10-0 lead and led 12-3 at the end of the first quarter. Fort Loramie used a 14-8 scoring edge in the second to pull within 20-17 at halftime, but Russia used a 12-6 edge in the third to take a 32-23 lead into the fourth.

The Redskins battled back and grabbed a 37-36 lead, but Russia scored the final three points. The Raiders blocked a shot out of bounds with 3.2 seconds left, and Fort Loramie didn’t get a clean look in the final seconds.

Phlipot and Braylon Cordonnier each scored nine points for Russia, which finished league play with an 11-1 record and tied Jackson Center for first place.

Caleb Maurer led Fort Loramie (16-6, 7-5) with 10 points. He reached 1,000 career points in the victory.

The Redskins finished SCAL play in a third-place tie with Botkins.

Jackson Center 58, Houston 22

The Tigers cruised to an SCAL win on Friday in Houston to secure a share of first place in SCAL play.

Jackson Center finished with an 11-1 league record, good for a first-place tie with Russia.

Houston finished SCAL play with a 2-10 record, good for a sixth-place finish ahead of Fairlawn.

Dayton Northridge 57, Lehman Catholic 35

The Cavaliers lost their regular-season and Three Rivers Conference finale on Friday in Dayton.

The Polar Bears led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter, 28-19 at halftime and 36-26 at the end of the third quarter.

Donovan O’Leary led Lehman (14-8, 7-7 TRC) with 17 points and had five rebounds. Justin Chapman scored nine points and had 10 rebounds.

Lehman shot 10 for 31 (32.3 percent) from the floor and was outrebounded 20-19.

The Cavaliers finished in a fourth-place tie with Milton-Union in final TRC standings.

Milton-Union 62, Riverside 45

The Pirates lost their TRC finale on Friday in De Graff.

The Bulldogs led 17-13 at the end of the first quarter, 27-18 at halftime and 44-35 at the end of the third quarter.

Ayden Clary led Riverside (6-15, 2-12) with nine points and had five rebounds. Kaleb Schindewolf scored eight points and had four rebounds. Myles Platfoot scored six points and had five steals and six rebounds. Warren Shockey scored six points and had five assists.

The Pirates finished in seventh place in final TRC standings.

Anna 41, Brookville 25

The Rockets won their tournament opener on Thursday at Northridge High School.

Anna scored the first 14 points and led 15-2 at the end of the first quarter. The Rockets led 24-5 at halftime and 30-14 at the end of the third quarter.

Brenna Cobb led Anna (14-9) with 10 points while Makenna Pettus and Jenna Wolters each scored eight.

The Rockets, which are the Dayton Division III sectional’s No. 5 seed, will face No. 4 Milton-Union (18-5) in a sectional final on Tuesday at Northridge.
