SIDNEY — A Sidney man was arrested after allegedly stabbing his wife Friday.

According to Shelby County Sheriff Jim Frye, on Feb. 10, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a stabbing in the 10000 block of Schenk Road. The call came in through an alarm company due to an activation of a pendant alarm through Life Alert.

Once a deputy arrived on scene, he was met by a man who stated that his grandfather stabbed his grandmother. Once the deputy entered the residence, he observed a female subject holding a sheet to the chest and neck area of another female who was later identified as Bonnie Loraine, 79. The deputy observed a large amount of blood on the sheet and around the chair Bonnie was sitting in. The deputy also observed an elderly male sitting in a chair across the room.

The grandson stated to the deputy that he had went to town and when he came back, he saw his grandpa on top of his grandma with a knife stabbing her. He said that he yelled for him to stop and to put the knife down. The grandson then grabbed his grandpa off his grandma and yelled at him to put the knife down again. He said his grandpa wouldn’t put the knife down so he hit him with the wheelchair and grabbed the knife and threw it into the trash can. The grandson then pressed the button to Life Alert and ran next door to get someone to help.

Upon arrival of other deputies, the male subject was identified as James Loraine, 81, the husband of Bonnie. He was secured in a cruiser, while the deputies waited for the arrival of the rescue squad. Bonnie was transported to Wilson Health. Another squad was requested to transport James to Wilson Health.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Office detectives were called to the scene to begin an investigation. It was found that Bonnie and James live at the residence. It was determined that Bonnie had been stabbed by her husband and that she received several cuts to her hands and approximately three puncture/stab wounds to the right side of her neck.

Bonnie was treated at Wilson Health and was later transported to Miami Valley Hospital where she is currently hospitalized. It is believed that she is in stable condition. James was also treated at Wilson Health. James suffers from severe dementia among other issues. James was later released to deputies and incarcerated in the Shelby County Jail on one charge of felonious assault, a second-degree felony.

The case will be reviewed by the Shelby County prosecutor and will be presented at a later date to a Shelby County grand jury.
